Obama could rescue a baby from the mouth of a lion, change its diaper, start a college fund for it, hand it back to its grateful mother, and he'd be raked over the coals for looking upon a bare baby butt... and chastised for taking so long.

.... your bias as a "fur'ner" comes in! (just kidding of course!)

Now here's a serious question ......... is Oprah as popular world wide as she is here? That's what I dont get. Sure, here she's one of the top celebs in the nation but is she even known globally?

But back to Pele ..... all I know is, when I was in college, I could step outside of my dorm room every day at 4pm and you could HEAR Oprah ALL OVER the WHOLE building because every TV in the joint would be on her show.

Pele ........ well ........... yeah ...... notsomuch.

You Murikin you

Not really sure how popular Oprah would be in my neck of the woods (ie Ireland and Britain - we Irish get their channels for free, it's a very privileged position).

Her show isn't on any of the main British channels (BBC, ITV, etc), just on the smaller ones, so her audiences wouldn't be too big - she'd be well known, but nothing like the phenomenon she is in the U.S.

But Pele! Actually, considering he retired over 30 years ago he's probably an historical figure to most, rather than someone they remember playing, but yeah, definitely, he's the stuff of legend in Europe, it being a football (**cough** soccer) stronghold. Still regarded by most as the greatest player of all time - except in Argentina, Maradona's their man.

PS I met Pele in Dublin once, my heart is still pounding  I couldn't believe he was real, I assumed he was sort of made up, like Superman.

Edited on Thu Oct-01-09 07:54 PM by Raine1967
She was so cool and down to earth -- and quite the artist. (We went to Parsons School of design in NYC)

She knew her dad was the shite, but she was raised to be her own person.

I always liked Pele -- being a NY'r -- but after getting to know his daughter - I felt like he was a really cool dad.

Every impressionist painting that you're familiar with is there. I like it far more than the Louvre. The Degas ballerina that you posted is there too.

I remember one summer evening being on the terrace of the d'Orsay looking at the domes and roofs of the buildings bathed in the golden light of the setting sun. It was one of the most beautiful views of Paris I had seen, it brought tears to my eyes.
