The Carter people hoped that Teddy would come up to the podium and the two men would raise their arms up together in a show of party unity. Instead, Teddy took his sweet time getting to the podium and offered a bland handshake to Carter. Not Teddy's finest moment. The tension between Kennedy and Carter was thick for years afterward.

15. President Carter ignited my lifelong interest in politics. Cute story:

My dad took me down to the local train station to see his mother during a whistle-stop tour during the campaign.

I just remember looking at the backs of a crowd of adults all listening to this woman and cheering and clapping. I never got a look at her actually.

Then, my school participated in the early voting thing with kids. I remember getting my little slip of paper and using a pencil to check off his name and then stuffing it in a ballot box.

My first vote. And that act has stayed with me forever. I think they should do it at all schools during every election. I think it instills a sense of empowerment and a lifelong devotion to casting one's ballot!

Happy Birthday, President Carter. You're a good man and a great American!

If there is a failing in your persona, in your approach, in your methods, it is one where your "better angels" gathered sway and blinded you to the realities of where our species resides in the pantheon of the kingdom - no, not the Kingdom of God, but in the animal kingdom. Your 'highest of the high' place in the Kingdom of God is assured.

If the human animal is the one God chose to be at the top of the animal kingdom, as a species, we have, in my opinion, worked harder to squander and destroy the greatest gift that could only come from God than any other animal in his kingdom. And therein lies the pity and the tragedy.
