MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. -- One of the best-known names in South Carolina politics is going back on the ballot with Carroll Campbell III announcing Wednesday he is seeking the Republican nomination in the state's 1st Congressional District.
Campbell, whose campaign signs read "A Legacy of Leadership," is the son of the late Gov. Carroll Campbell, the popular congressman and two-term governor credited with helping build South Carolina's modern GOP.
The younger Campbell, who made his announcement with the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown as a backdrop, faces incumbent Republican Henry Brown, who seeks a sixth term next year.
Campbell, who has not held elective office, wasted no time going on the offensive.
"You can't say it's time to throw the bums out and then vote for your local politician who keeps bumming a ride back to Washington based on bailout votes, earmarks and years of running for office," said Campbell, 45, who runs a business consulting and public relations firm.
"We deserve better than Henry Brown," said Campbell, joined by his fiance, Tracey Amick, his mother, Iris, and his brother Mike, who was an unsuccessful candidate for lieutenant governor in 2006.
"I will fight against the big spending liberals in Washington, not join them in a spending spree," Campbell promised.
