This from my friend, Hunter Roberts, a minister and psychotherapist:

Do you wonder what on earth makes paunchy old white guys like Glen Beck accuse our sharp, Harvard-educated consensus-building, moderate President of "reverse" racism against whites. There is NOTHING in his history or his policies that would give evidence for that. In psycho-jargon it's called “projection”. When you have feelings that you can't admit to, you project those feelings onto someone else – most often onto the very person who stirred the unacceptable feelings in you.

Projection is a common dysfunction, and can be observed often in family feuds, such as when an abusive husband accuses his wife of disrespect. What, after all, could be more disrespectful than his own abuse? Projection is not conscious, and so is not deliberate. The person who projects sincerely believes that what they say about the other person applies.

So these old white men have been unconsciously thinking, "Man, if my family and I had been treated the way we've treated Black folks for centuries, I sure would hate us. So here is this black guy with all this power, and well, of course he’s gonna use it for revenge. I would.” Hence the projection: Obama hates white people, because I would hate white people if I were Black.

But Obama is a better man than that, and, I might add, a truer Christian. He has more useful things to do than try to get revenge on anyone today for the injustices of the past. He would rather right past wrongs than continue them. If that sounds more like the Gospel message to you than anything Rush Limbaugh is promoting, take heed. Obama doesn’t hate any group. And neither does God.

that Beck needs to justify what he's doing. Projection follows something called "splitting," where you split off an unacceptable feeling or thought from the rest of your conscious mind, thus isolating it from further questioning and association to the rest of your personality. It's what allows Beck to tear up over his disabled daughter or "America," while also doing and saying things that might actually bring harm to both...except that he projects those thoughts and feelings onto Obama, the left, etc.

I understand Katie Couric is about to interview him for CBS.com. A few well-placed questions could bring that split into focus and, while he probably would twist himself into a pretzel trying not to see it, the rest of us would.

13. Makes no sense to me.

Someone who has a white mother and was born in this country knows America is a melting pot. And all these people are doing is stirring the melting pot some for political advantage. When it comes right down to it, your either against a melting pot (racist) or your for it (not racist). I wouldn't think Obama would be against it and against white people. This could tell us how whites will behave toward a 100% black person if this even exist in the US.

or that SHE hates anybody. She speculating about what thoughts go through Glenn Beck's mind to cause him to believe that Obama hates white people, as follows:

1. Glenn thinks "We whites have mistreated blacks for centuries."
2. Glenn thinks "If I, Glenn Beck, were black, I would hate white people for what they have done to blacks."
3. Glenn thinks "This black guy, Obama has the power to take revenge."
4. Glenn thinks "If I were Obama I'd want revenge."
5. Glenn thinks "I'm afraid of Obama because... Obama has a deep-seated hatred of white people".

You're not the only person on this thread who mis-understood Hunter's point, so evidently it was not perfectly clear. Let me know whether this explanation makes sense.
