Des Moines -- They are store clerks, builders, school teachers and medical workers. They are union members and college students. Some are young. Many are new to politics.

These are Democratic contender Howard Dean's eclectic but passionate supporters slated to help select a presidential nominee in this state's pivotal caucuses a week from Monday.

Just how the son of a Wall Street broker, Yale graduate, child of Long Island and Northeast governor surged in this rural farm state to a top spot along with rival Missouri Rep. Richard Gephardt is informed by a look at his foot soldiers.
