Police: Armed man arrested during Obama address
Police: Armed man arrested during Obama address

WASHINGTON – U.S. Capitol Police have arrested a Virginia man they say tried to drive into a secure area near the Capitol with a shotgun and rifle in his car as the president gave his health care address to Congress.

Joshua Bowman, 28, of Falls Church, Va., was arrested around 8 p.m. Wednesday and charged with two counts of possession of an unregistered firearm and one count of unlawful possession of ammunition. Each carries a possible one-year jail sentence and $1,000 fine.

Bowman's intentions were unclear, said police spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider, but the U.S. Attorney's Office in Washington decided against prosecuting him on more serious charges, said spokesman Benjamin Friedman.

Schneider said Bowman approached a security checkpoint near the Cannon House Office Building in a four-door Honda Civic and told officers he wanted to park.

People who want to drive into the area must have a permit and have their vehicles searched. The timing of the request raised an officer's suspicion, Schneider said, and Bowman consented to a vehicle search.

A shotgun, rifle and 500 rounds of ammunition were found in Bowman's trunk, said Erica Stanley, a spokeswoman for the District of Columbia mayor's office.

A telephone directory lists a Joshua Bowman in Falls Church, but the telephone rang unanswered Thursday afternoon.

1. Cased, unloaded weapons locked in the trunk of a car != "armed"
But I'm sure our resident drama monarchs won't let that stop them from vomiting all over this thread.

3. Yeah, nothing clearly suspicious of some guy with two rifles and 500 rounds.

6. and the reason he had 500 rounds was because he was expecting

a spontaenous crowd of car jackers to descend on him at the same time and he wasn't confident of his ability to shoot straight.

11. Shooting 500 rounds in an afternoon is not hard

Obviously he was transporting the weapons. They were not readily available.

5. What I find most interesting...
...is the total absence of marijuana found on the suspect...
I find this extremely telling... of what exactly, I forget.

7. I was wondering when this would happen. Frankly, I am not surprised.
We've been living with lawlessness posing as political revolt for a few months now and I saw this as its ultimate resolution: someone trying to shoot the president on his way to the Capitol for a speech to the joint session of Congress.

I think we'll see this at the next SOTU speech. It is a sad day in America.

Nice Prevention, Capitol Police. Hasn't been too long that the Holocaust Guard, Stephen Tyrone Johns was killed by a birther mad man.
