Is all of this hate because Obama was born Black? Cause that's the only thing that he's done to these fucked up assholes other than giving most of them a tax cut,

I was seriously an Obama supporter. Now I just can't get the sight out of my mind of a brief segment I saw during the campaign where they were interviewing someone who had attended classes with him at Harvard. When asked about Obama, he said he had always thought that Obama was a Republican. At the time I mostly ignored it, but it's been haunting me more and more.

To respond to the OP, though, it truly boggles the mind. After 8 years of Bush, and the 8 years before that which were nothing but the same rabid animals going after Clinton, when it was THEIR GUY and his cohort in Congress that utterly destroyed so much of what we had going for us in this country, now with Obama in charge they seem to think he's threatening our democracy, or whatever, somehow they're scared.

I can't even get my head around it. How can their be people that deluded?

Imagine how they'd feel if we had an actual progressive in power? One who fought for left-wing causes the way their guy steamrolled the far right's agenda? They'd riot, they'd kill, they'd destroy civil society entirely just to spite us.

It's getting harder to keep hope alive on the left side of the fence. I still think that if we just keep the faith, eventually their arguments will look so incredibly stupid that reason will win out.

How do we get an actual progressive in the White House? I'd settle for Dean if there's no better alternative.

I actually believe that real health-care reform would have been possible, had he been sincere about it and not worried about offending his corporate sponsors, and their right-wing friends.

The case against the insurance industry is a really good one, and a really easy one to make. Simple too, so simple a caveman could understand it, which means the average American might have some chance of understanding it too. And allowing people to buy-in to Medicare doesn't sound very radical to me.

And yes, I think Dean is electable (the powers-that-be crucified him for not being a corporatista, using Dean's poorly executed campaign rally to oust him from contention, if not that they'd have found something else, it was nothing), and I think he can get health care done. He's not my perfect candidate, but my point is, if Obama doesn't step up on this issue, as far as I'm concerned the jury is in and I can start working for actual progressive reform, and whatever candidates will best get us there.

I grew up in West Virginia, and know many, many racists. To them, the prospect of a black man succeeding more than they personally do is terrifying. To see a man with brown skin in the White House throws them into fits of apoplexy because it reminds them, day after day, that their beliefs aren't shared by nearly anyone these days.

It's the last thrashing of a Fat, White, Balding, Impotent Republican Titan, being subsumed by the Olympian tides of history.

My only worry is that one of these assholes will act out in defense of his fellow idiots and their idiocy and do some damage a la Tim McVeigh.

Aside from that, this is it. Their ways are dying as quickly as are the elderly that comprise their 'base'. If the Republicans don't distance themselves from the crazies, they're going to go the way of the Whigs and Free Soil Party within a decade.

Though I don't see Americans making much progress intellectually, I do see a lot of racial progress, and agree that as the old die off, this problem gradually improves. As you said, they're aware of their impending doom and therefore they are especially dangerous.

The same is true for big energy interests on the cap and trade issue. If they can use an issue to discredit President Obama they can erode his credibility. At the moment they are employing a shotgun approach where they characterize anything President Obama suggests is wrong wrong wrong.

I believe you posted on that thread and might have seen me skirting that issue. I really hate to think this, but we know that there are some who cannot tolerate the idea that a man of color has been elected to the Oval Office. To permit this man to address our school children is to give somewhat of a tacit approval to an African-American leading this Country, and that is an idea a portion of our population will never publicly condone, especially in front their children. I think this prejudice also attaches to the so-called birthers, some of whom are appalled at Obama's election and will seize any opportunity to publicly imply he is illegitimate.

Others seek to simply demean and humiliate the man because he does not agree with their right-wing views.
