The President's View on the Public Option
http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/health-care-action-center/

* Reduce costs — Rising health care costs are crushing the budgets of governments, businesses, individuals, and families, and they must be brought under control
* Guarantee choice — Every American must have the freedom to choose their plan and doctor – including the choice of a public insurance option
* Ensure quality care for all — All Americans must have quality and affordable health care

by the White House, yes?

And he has already contradicted himself.

So until he says it again -- as President - we really don't know.

4. I guess some people need to be told daily, or they have lost
any faith they ever had... they must be constantly reminded.

Obama said something else I remember, (about 100 times or more) "It won't be easy!"

People like to forget that one, too.

6. So what is President Obama's view on a strong public option?
Edited on Wed Sep-02-09 11:59 AM by Better Believe It
I do know that President Obama stated that he "prefers" a public option and called public insurance just a little "sliver" in the health care package he supports. Describing the public option he "prefers" as a "sliver" suggests a very weak public health insurance plan that does not threaten the private insurance industry.

Has President Obama indicated what kind of public option he "prefers" or is doesn't he have any thoughts on that?

Lots of conflicting proposals have been called a "public option". Perhaps a little clarity from the White House on what President Obama wants is in order, or maybe not. Keep it all fuzzy and leave it up to Congress. President Obama will sign whatever they hand him.

17. You're a
fucking mind reader now?

No, him saying it's just a sliver doesn't suggest a weak plan. It suggests just what it states, a sliver in a big pile of slivers needed to reform health care.

But you're so blinded with your hatred of all things Obama that you can't wrap your mind around that fact and instead want to come here pushing the right wing bullshit as usual.

10. You are missing your target, my friend.
It is leftists like me, not partisans but leftists, who are pissed right now. I, and others, evidently, unrec'd this thread because the President's posturing on his web page is useless, since he has, of late, intentionally sent out signals that he is willing to abandon the public option in able to claim victory with the passage of a "health insurance reform" bill.

We are warning him, and you, in no uncertain terms, that when we (meaning the left) produce a Democratic President and solid majorities in both the House and the Senate that we expect to be heard.

We expect real reform on this issue, and the Democratic Party would be better off doing nothing that passing an ill-conceived bail-out of the health insurance cabal. Without a robust public option, that's what it's looking like we're going to get.

I don't think there are nearly as many Freepers here as you imagine.

12. I don't unrecommend any posts including those posted by White House staffers assigned to DU

I assume at least one White House staff person is assigned the task of monitoring DU and posting here. If not, they're dissing us!

:)

14. I suspect you are right.
I was very opposed to the addition of the unrec function to DU, but, now that it's here, I find myself using it ... especially when I see a post complaining about the fact that people are using it. Those who don't like it when a thread gets unrec'd should have fought harder to keep the function out of DU.

And I too will feel dissed if White House staff is not monitoring us. I only wish their spin was a little more subtle.

If anyone tears down an unsourced troll-ass Politico article by showing evidence to the contrary, they are from the government.

That doesn't sound foolish at all.

27. I hope you are right, and I hope the President manages to get us real health care reform.
So far, all I see is a proposal for a massive bail-out of the criminal health insurance cabal. That's not good enough, and you need to recognize the truth of that. It is, in fact, staring you right in the face.

24. I worked to elect Obama. I spent many hours supporting him in the primaries.
I don't know just how strong he is on getting a good public option that could challenge the health care industry that is raping the public. You only have to look at the compensation that the CEO and their staffs are receiving to understand why they are going to fight any thing that could jeopardize their gross over compensation.

16. Last I heard, there were five bills floating around
with various levels of public option ranging from zero to lots. If the gossip is to be believed, another one will arrive on the scene before long, one with much more presidential input.

If you really want to know what's in the bills that are currently in circulation, the Google and the Library of Congress are your friends. No one is hiding anything.

18. I have no idea what is going to make it to the final version
No one is hiding anything, but nothing has been decided, and most importantly, Obama has not said specifically which ones he accepts/rejects. Unless you can point me to a statement.

23. I just chucked my copy of Skeptic magazine accross the room
Edited on Thu Sep-03-09 10:54 AM by sudopod
because they're kissing the ass of some schmuck named Matt Ridley who is a farily popular science writer. Ridley used this forum to explain that he thinks Adam Smith is the best thing ever and that the economic collapse was caused by the government and poor people. You know, because the government made banks give too many loans to poor people. He had nothing to say about the repeal of Glass-Steagall, mortgage-backed securities, or derivatives trading. Ridley smugly laid this all out right before they took a picture of him standing in front of his family estate, which is an enormous mansion named Blagdon Hall. You'd think a magazine called "Skeptic" would challenge that shit...

So I'm already raging when I see this.

I could wax eloquent about pretentious hipsters, then troll you and say that your music sucks ass, the people who weren't listening in Presov clearly had good taste, and that your blog could be a template for that every angst-filled wannabe e-celebrity ever. I could instead lay forth an multi-page, well thought out explanation of how the President is the leader of the executive branch of government and the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, not a god who can change reality at a whim, then point to his life that up to now has been a struggle against poverty and inequality to show how ludicrous your drive-by criticism is. I could point out how you can't just say "LOL, KTHXBAI", buy 200,000 plane tickets and call it a day, or that we have a somewhat larger responsibility to the people whose countries we raped than leaving five bucks on the dresser on the way out.

Instead, I'm going to post a picture of a cat, because life is too fucking short.
