Poll question: How do you feel about naming the public option "KennedyCare"?
Edited on Thu Aug-27-09 08:20 AM by nyc 4 Biden
This has been mentioned elsewhere, and I would like to know what your take is.

Would it be a good idea to name the public option "KennedyCare"?

1. I don't know - Republicans might never admit it's a good plan with that name...
But the bill should be named after him.

11. Repukes would adore that name.. They've already been using "Obamacare"..
as a derogatory term.

A more formal name would be better IMO.

12. Like Medicare, they'll eventually embrace the plan - that would happen sooner...
...if the name Kennedy isn't used.

This is part of TK's legacy for which he should be remembered.

2. Personally, Teddycare/Tedicare is nice
because it ties it to medicare, which people love. But either is fine by me.

6. It also makes people think of teddy bears...huggable, lovable creatures
you can have in bed with you when you're sick.

The Repugs will do everything within their power to keep THAT nickname from sticking, because they know it will have more positive emotive power than anything else. If it does, they will ridicule it every way in the world, but it won't be very effective.

In short, everything should be done to get it formally named after him and INformally referred to (not formally named) as "TeddyCare."

It'll drive the wingnuts crazy, because it sounds so tender and nurturing, and they know it.

4. I favor calling HR 676 "Kennedy Care"
Either that or revive his 2007 "Medicare-for-all" bill and call that "Kennedy-care."

9. I would love to have a Medicare-for-All named after Kennedy.
I'm afraid i think that ship has sailed for now. Hopefully the public option will lead back to single payer.

10. "Medicare for all" is much better than what's now being considered in Congress.
I have little hope that a puny public option will lead to single-payer. The individual mandate is just a bail-out of the insurance industry. It will be a boon to them. It will make them stronger. That will make it harder for us to get single-payer in the future.

The original designer of the public option, Hacker, devised the plan as a way to prevent a single-payer system. That's what the public option is for.

13. I still like the name another DUer proposed, "AmeriCare." No disrespect to
the Senator, but I think he might agree that calling it KennedyCare or TeddyCare is a bad fit. I feel differently about naming a bill the Ted Kennedy Memorial Bill or something similar, but I prefer a different name for the program itself.

honor for certain. His name should be in the debate untill a bill is drawn up. We should bring all the people he helped into the debate that would be the smarter route to go. Maybe name the bill Kennedy care once it's reached the whitehouse, of course only if it contains a strong public option. Come on Duvall make it happen for the magic 60 then have a special elecction after the vote has been cast. Duvall could say in honor of Kennedy the seat will be filled for the passing of health care refore with a special election after.
