Kennedy Lauds Obama As Worthy Heir To JFK

CBS/AP) Two generations of Kennedys - the Democratic Party's best-known political family - endorsed Barack Obama for president on Monday, with Sen. Edward M. Kennedy calling him a "man with extraordinary gifts of leadership and character," a worthy heir to his assassinated brother.

"It was a moment packed with political significance," said CBS senior political correspondent Jeff Greenfield. "Ted and Caroline Kennedy — the surviving brother and surviving child of the most revered Democratic President — declaring that the torch has been passed."

"There was another time, when another young candidate was running for president and challenging America to cross a new frontier. He faced criticism from the preceding Democratic president, who was widely respected in the party," Kennedy said, referring to Harry S. Truman.

"And John Kennedy replied, 'The world is changing. The old ways will not do. ... It is time for a new generation of leadership.

"So it is with Barack Obama," he added.

14. Oh, I believe there are DU posters who developed a distinct dislike for Senator Kennedy around,...

coincidentally I am sure, the time he had the 'effrontery' to champion Obama on or about January 20th, 2008 and the very thought, never mind mention, that Kennedy passed the torch to Obama.....well....results in a :nuke: reaction, lol.

3. He passed the torch to all of us as well.
How many of us have been influenced by him? Tons of us. We have a strong voice too and can use it. I won't let Teddy's dreams die with his death and I don't think anyone here will either.

9. That day was one of the most incredible days I have seen
In my lifetime politicaly. There was magic in the air that day. I have been watching that rally today smiling at how much fun Ted was having. I wish that he had had the time to be a true partner to Obama during his presidency it would have been fun to watch.

RIP Teddy and thank you for all that you did.

An awesome day.

11. Bea, Frenchie I love both you guys
Teddy did what he felt was right. I can't tell anyone what he really felt because I am not him.

I love Barack, I love Hillary
(I really love Joe but you guys knew that already...:)

The torch can be passed to US. Not just to a politician. Teddy inspired more then one generation. There are people across the United States who consider him to be their senator. He helped pass bill upon bill that changed things for the better for ordinary people. He should be remembered and loved for that first and foremost.

Endorsements come and go, some don't pan out but I think Teddy's legacy is more then that. He wanted the torch passed on to all who fight for equality, justice...health care for all. Barack and Hillary both want this.
In the great words of our VP from earlier today..."It was always about you. It was never about him." His legacy was not just about him and what he did. Its about more then one person. Its about all of us wanting what he believed in. I hope all the Dems in our party get that. I know Obama does, I know Hillary does..they have given their lives to public service for years.

12. Hi, Jenni.
He would have united the party far more if he had remained above the fray, like Gore did. I'm saddened by his death because it signifies the end of an era. But checking many blogs today, the mixed feelings abound. The Kennedys have gone through so much and now they had two deaths in 15 days, I wouldn't wish that on anyone. But the open wound is still there and cannot be denied.

Goodnight, my friend.

17. I think I used the right word.....
digress  /dɪˈgrɛs, daɪ-/ Show Spelled Pronunciation Show IPA
Use digress in a Sentence

–verb (used without object) 1. to deviate or wander away from the main topic or purpose in speaking or writing; depart from the principal line of argument, plot, study, etc.
2. Archaic. to turn aside.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I depart from the principal line of the AP headline....I wander away...I turn aside.
In otherwords, what they say is not what I agree with.

19. Perhaps the problem is that I used "erroneously".....and then said I digressed.....
Edited on Thu Aug-27-09 12:01 AM by FrenchieCat
which could be read as me digressing from the fact that it was erroneous, and therefore making it appear that I disagreed that it was erroneous, and therefore communicated that I believed it to be correct (their headline).

So, yes....because I inserted erroneous last, I could read it in a way that I didn't really mean.
:)

21. The Kennedy torch burns for eternity on JFKs grave. The political torch
has been passed to President Obama by Senator Kennedy himself.

I would think that AP comment to be extremely insulting to the Kennedy family.
