Is this debate really about health care?
I tend to think it's all mostly about a Dem in the White House. Obama happens to be a big target because of his race and name and how that type of fear is easier to stoke among certain segments of society. Also, health care is a battle the Right has had success with in the past and they seem to be able to rally the troops better on that issue because they can throw out their tried and true buzzwords like socialism etc into the debate.

So maybe this is worse for various reasons, but I think they would oppose any Dem in the WH and do it in the ugly ways that they did with Bill Clinton and now are doing with Obama. I bet the next Dem president will get the same treatment too. That's just how they operate.

The big difference right now I think is that it's a changing country and is likely to further marginalize the GOP in further elections. I hope so anyway.

1. It's about power and who will gain in the next election.
It makes no difference what in on the agenda, the Republicans will oppose it. Many other things require brains to debate.

2. That may be part of the GOP's reason, but it's not Big Health's reason
Mostly, it's about Big Health's power and wealth, and protecting it.
