Obama, Baucus get together on health care -- with hundreds of others
The theme for President Obama's next town hall meeting on health care -- Friday in Bozeman, Mont. -- is set.
Max Baucus will be in the house.
Baucus, a Montana Democrat and chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, has balked at some of Obama's proposals, including the "public option" on health insurance. Baucus has also discussed lifting tax emptions for employer-based health insurance, an idea Obama has resisted.
Baucus won't be on-stage Friday in his home state.
"He'll be in attendance," said White House press secretary Robert Gibbs. "He's not an introducer. ... He's not a participant."
Gibbs also said that Obama will continue speaking out against misrepresentations of his health care views, including the claims of "death panels" and "government-run" health care. This despite the old political saw that, "when you're explaining, you're losing."
Said Gibbs: "He understands he has a pulpit that is large enough to deal with some of the misinformation that some people might not ordinarily ask or inquire about because they've read it somewhere and they just assume that it's true even if it's not."
