A recent letter complained that “the Obama administration is so intent on pushing its agenda through as fast as possible” and that “we are angry and tired of being ignored by the people elected to represent us.” In the same issue, Mr. Vince Caravan noted that “Barack Obama handily defeated John McCain for the presidency of the United States last November.”
My question is this: given that President Obama was chosen by the American people with a clear majority (53% to 46%), and since the Democratic Party won the majority of seats in both the House and Senate, shouldn’t we expect him to push through his agenda?
True, “his charm and oratory played a large part in the victory,” but what sold me were the proposals described on his campaign web site. They showed an understanding of the complex issues facing us and offered thoughtful solutions.
From what I can see, President Obama is following through on his campaign promises. Rather than ignoring his opposition, he has been subjected to criticism from the left for making compromises.
These are scary times, no doubt about it. They are made scarier by misinformation spread by such seemingly reputable sources as former Lieutenant Governor Betsy McCaughey. I urge you to go to HealthReform.gov to see what Obama has to say. You can also go to the Scopes.com for an unbiased analysis of many rumors. Most of all, recognize that there are both left-wing and right-wing groups out there discussing the issues. You owe it to yourself to get both sides of the discussion.
