I'll put on my flameproof underware...
Why did the president say that AARP had endorsed his health care reform.
Several times today.
They haven't.

1. Because they ARE backing health care reform. They are running ads to counter the lies.
Edited on Wed Aug-12-09 12:18 AM by SemiCharmedQuark
They've even done a townhall. There is no one bill for them to back ATM, but they have said that reform is needed and spoken highly of the reforms proposed. He shouldn't have said they endorsed, but they do indeed agree that reform is needed and that the proposals are good.

2. They do support health care reform.

I don't recall if President Obama used the word "endorse" or "support" when describing AARP. While they haven't endorsed the plan (probably because there is no actual plan to endorse yet), they do support reform in general.

4. He said both...I think he mispoke the second time.
Heres what he said:

“We have the AARP on board because they know this is a good deal for our seniors,” the president said.

and then

"Well, first of all, another myth that we've been hearing about is this notion that somehow we're going to be cutting your Medicare benefits. We are not. AARP would not be endorsing a bill if it was undermining Medicare, okay?”

"a bill"

That's simply saying they are on board to support a bill.

People are idiots.

AARP tells Obama: No health plan endorsement yet

By RICARDO ALONSO-ZALDIVAR (AP) – 6 hours ago

WASHINGTON — A group usually seen as one of Barack Obama's allies in the health care debate — AARP — says the president went too far Tuesday when he said the seniors lobby had endorsed the legislation pending in Congress.

Basically the AARP sees Obama leaning heavily on them, with a soft plan. They see that their bargaining power is high if they hold of on endorsement, and they are basically right.

7. Thanks for that.
I guess I was wrong in thinking that they have already endorsed it. I still do believe they are for health reform in some fashion, though.

11. Yeah, they are. Elderly need some kind of fix quick and they know it.
And they are a critical part of getting support for the plan. That's why you have the "death panels killing elderly" propaganda campaigns going on, because they want to influence dumbass AARP members to influence the (non-dumbass) organization itself into fighting for a different plan. The organization itself sees its power here though, and clearly intends to use it. What the details will look like in the end I don't know.

32. One thing that bugs me on these threads is that younger people
seem to think all older people are automatic members of AARP. The word 'elderly' is an odd choice, as AARP memberships are open to those 55 or older. Not exactly elderly. One third of Medicare beneficiaries are disabled people who are too young for AARP.
The AARP, is more like the Auto Club than a political organization. The crazy death panel types, why do you assume they are AARP members? Why would they be? Chances are they are not. They might be. But to assume the dumbasses we are seeing are AARP members because of their age is just an assumption, based on nothing real.
I know plenty of people who are old enough to be in AARP, few are members of AARP, and those that are see it as an affinity purchase plan, a source of some information, and that is about it. I've never met one 'elderly' person who cues their opinion from AARP. I've know a couple who bought insurance via one of their deals, but no one who asks them how to think, or vote. Also, all of the members of AARP I have known have been under 65, and would take the word 'elderly' as an indication of a lack of perspective.
To gain the support of a majority of Seniors, respect and knowledge are the keys. AARP backed Bush's Medicare reform, and most who use that plan are not pleased with it. So the approval of the AARP is not a golden ticket to Senior opinion. Because there is no such thing as senior opinion, any more than there is Middle Aged opinion. Keith and Sean Hannity seem about the same age, do they not? Does one of them speak for the 'mid-lifers'? And when I see a tea bagger who is 22, shall I assume that the youth are tea baggers, or simply that that one young person is a tea bagger? I've seen some very young birthers. The youth are therefore birthers?

"The elderly" are no more monolithic in opinions that the youth, or any other age group. Some are Republicans, some are Democrats. Like everybody else.

35. My words were fine.
I used elderly to indicate older people, who are dealing with healthcare issues more than 55 year olds.

The crazy death panel types, why do you assume they are AARP members?

I don't, and I didn't say that. The death panel propaganda is being made by right wing groups to terrorize the elderly. AARP is an important interest group and an important endorsement. So what I said is that these right wing propaganda organizations would like to target AARP members, to try to get them to directly influcence AARP, because AARP is too smart to fall for the crap unless its coming from most of their members.

8. How quickly we all forget.....
Two weeks ago....

President Barack Obama participates in an AARP tele-town hall on health care, Tuesday, July 28, 2009, in Washington.

And there's also......

WASHINGTON - JUNE 22: Barry Rand (2L) of AARP intoroduces U.S. President Barack Obama (L) as Sen. Christopher Dodd (D-CT) (R) and Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT) look on in the Diplomatic Reception Room at the White House June 22, 2009 in Washington, DC. President Obama announced that drug companies have agreed to put $80 billion towards the cost of drugs for seniors and part of his proposed health care legislation.

I think AARP is mincing words to protect some $$ at the moment. Last thing they need are crazy, misinformed seniors hearing Faux tell them that the AARP supports the evil, socialist Hitler Kenyan death camp dude.

The AARP is making it absolutely clear that they strongly support President Obama's healthcare reform efforts and are speaking out against lies used to scare seniors into opposing it:
