I just sent my LTTE regarding Health Care Reform, I thought I would share it with you all and see what you think..
The Mythology of Republicans: Health Care Leviathan.
There is definitely a lot of Œinfo¹ about the Health Care Reform that is coming; too bad most of it is misinformation, if not flat out lying. All the Œdissent¹ rolling off forked tongues and the unruly behavior is mostly due to the media and the likes of Limbaugh, Fox News and other Republican hobbles.
Before I get into the Œwhat is,¹ I first would like to address the issue of Socialism. What is Socialism? According to the Socialist Party of America (www.sp-usa.org):
³THE SOCIALIST PARTY strives to establish a radical democracy that places people's lives under their own control - a non-racist, classless, feminist socialist society... where working people own and control the means of production and distribution through democratically-controlled public agencies; where full employment is realized for everyone who wants to work; where workers have the right to form unions freely, and to strike and engage in other forms of job actions; and where the production of society is used for the benefit of all humanity, not for the private profit of a few. We believe socialism and democracy are one and indivisibleŠ²
Those who act as though Socialism is some vile and evil Government Philosophy, as well as the idea that Socialism is Communism which is more than often the case, just fail to look around and see that Socialism is already here. If Socialism is so wrong, then I think we need to pull up those things from their roots that are socialized in the States and make them for profit.
We should start with the Fire and Police Departments, which would also include 911; so when you have an emergency, you better have a valid credit card handy. Then there is the VA, yes the VA is a socialized institution; so all the veterans that need care will have to pay for services. Next we have Social Security, also a government run service that is also socialized, so I would expect that all those who are crying Œsocialism,¹ are not using this socialized service or will stop after reading this. It is not called Social Services for nothing, all the unemployment benefits and assistance is all socialized, so is Medicaid and Medicare. Do I need to go on or are you getting the picture?
Now some of the facts, about the Health Care reform; the ³what it is² versus the ³what it is not² part:
1: Your employer will not just offer the public option; you will be given a choice, which Federal Employees already have.
2: Private insurance will not be eliminated, the number of insured will increase to 2 million by 2019, most of which will be held by private insurance. Most people will choose to continue with their current providers through their employer.
3: Illegal immigrants are specifically excluded from coverage.
4: The public option is not too expensive: Rates are set based on income as it relates to the poverty level.
5: Health Care reform will not bust the budget, The CBO has also reported that the House plan is budget neutral and will create a $6 billion surplus
6: America does not have the best health care system in the world. America is ranked 37 in the world behind such countries as Colombia, Singapore and Morocco. France is rated at number one, followed by Italy.
Pew Research Center did a study that said (among other things): Just 15% say health care in this country is the "best in the world," while 23% rate it as "above average"; about six-in-ten (59%) view U.S. health care as either "average" (32%) or "below average" (27%). (source: healthcarerefromyths.org)
7: The Œrationing¹ of heath care myth: Well, it already is, since your insurer decides what is covered and how much they will pay, and if they do not pay you either pay for it yourself or go without.
The US is the only industrialized country without a universal health care system, it is also the most expensive yet it provides exclusively and not inclusively. For being the ³richest² country in the world, we do a horrible job at taking care of our less fortunate. It is also worthy to note that President Obama is not a Socialist, Obama is a Capitalist as is all US politicians. By offering a Public Option to the Health Care System, does not make one a Socialist, if that were the case then Medicaide and Medicare (which are socialized services) should be discontinued based on the "logic" of the Health Care Reform naysayers. In my opinion, some things should not be for profit; Health Care is a right and should not be seen as a privilege.
There are plenty more fallacies out there regarding Health Care Reform, all of which are false of course. A couple of good resources for you to read: healthcarereformmyths.org and healthreform.gov
