1. If President Obama
lied about WMD and declared war on Iraq the right wing would be up in arms about him doing such a horrible thing. If President Obama had served in the National Guard and deserted his military unit to avoid a drug test, the right wing's panties would be in triple knots.

Obama, Clinton - success. Conservatives just hate that.

4. There were pervasive rumors during the Bush Administration....
Edited on Wed Aug-05-09 01:16 PM by sofa king
... That North Korea's nuclear test was a fake, and the Bush Administration played along with it because it kept the sheep scared.

What North Korea's leadership really wants and needs is massive outside assistance so that Kim can continue to oppress his people without starving them to death, a prospect North Koreans face almost every winter.

If those things are true, then yes, negotiating through this little hostage-taking was probably easier than it looked. It may have been as simple as Governor Clinton saying, "You know, now that the rest of the world thinks you have The Bomb, nobody is going to shed a tear if we leave you bastards to starve this winter. Give us our people back."

Edit: There is still plenty of doubt on the matter from this latest test. Whatever happened, it didn't break the way the North Koreans wanted it to break. North Korea most likely has conventional explosives dating back to the 1950s, as the United States did prior to the first Gulf War. We donated all our explosives to the Iraqi people--the hard way. The North Koreans may have decided to fake a test with theirs.

12. No, there is only one President.
Edited on Wed Aug-05-09 02:39 PM by sofa king
Some titles, like General and Governor, stay with the person who held the title after they leave that office. Others in which there is only one office-holder at a time, such as President or Speaker, do not.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Style_(manner_of_address)

Thus, former President Clinton becomes Governor Clinton. When President Obama leaves office, he will become The Honorable Barack Obama, or possibly Senator Obama.

Edit: There is one notable exception. George W. Bush will forever be known to me as, "that asshole."

15. No problema.
I know this because way back when I sent a loopy email to former President/Governor Clinton, asking him whether he preferred to be called "President," or "Governor," or something else.

I got back a two-word answer which I would like to pretend came from the Big Dog himself. It said,

"The Honorable."

So, knowing that, I probably should have stuck to that term, but I used "Governor" to distinguish him from SoS Clinton.

10. Just to clarify...who is subhuman? The NK government or the NK people?
Edited on Wed Aug-05-09 02:09 PM by truth2power
I assume you were referring to the NK govt.

And in that respect, I don't give a crap about Kim Jong Il. I feel sorry for the oppressed NK people. But if his atrocities, overall, were put up against the US Govt. atrocities, overall, I guess we would both be neck & neck.

Not taking you to task personally. It's just sad that no matter how monstrous another govt. is, our govt. has done that and more to innocent people around the world.

ETA> I'm glad that Clinton was able to get those people back. I don't care how he accomplished it.

13. And a hearty wink and nod to John Kerry
Sen. John Kerry, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was also closely involved in coordinating efforts with the White House and State Department to free the women.

According to sources intimately involved with the efforts, Sen. John Kerry -- chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee -- received an official invitation to visit Pyongyang to facilitate their release and open a larger dialogue on the nuclear issue after several weeks of quiet direct diplomacy between Kerry and his aides and North Korea.

Much to John Bolton disgust, we may well hear good news of John Kerry's work with North Korea in the future.

16. I hope thatObama, the state departmant and Kerry will succeed in
their efforts here.

I still remember when the Democrats on the SFRC and Senator Voinivich kept Bolton from getting a recommendation as UN secretary. Those hearings were terrifying to think that Bolton would be considered by ANY administration for anything.
