As a Secular Humanist, I differ with Obama's opinion and the like opinion of others, suspecting that their positions are predicated upon religious belief.

In my humble opinion, marriage is a choice made by two people who love each other, regardless of sex, commemorated by whatever rites the couple may choose, and subject to the provisions and benefits of law available to any and all heterosexual couples. But, as long as progress is being made, step by step, state by state, my opinion will not cause me to disparage others who do not agree with me. I will publicly disagree with actions, not opinions, that are counter to what I hold to be just and honorable. I have seen no evidence of Obama or any other progressive acting to prevent the individual states from enacting legislation that supports my view.

You and I have never, and probably will never, have an opportunity to sit down together with a beer of choice (if you so choose) and discuss our opinions. Certainly, it is not for me to question your sanity because our opinions might or might not vary on some subject. But, what I will ask you is, "Is it a responsible and just position to condemn the opinion of others, so long as progress is being made toward what you consider an optimum goal?"

Frankly, that action would make Don Quixote look like a piker. How are you going to get a reasonable decision from a jury that is made up of folks that believe that the omnipotent creator of the trillion galaxy universe came to our tiny Milky Way, proceeded to an obscure, medium-sized star out in the hinterlands, three-fifths of the way from galactic center and impregnated a Jewish virgin in order to give humankind a chance at either Utopia or eternal torture? And you expect these same folks would make an opinion like yours? Good grief! Get over the hope of changing minds; work hard on changing actions. A tiny bit of progress has been made, but not nearly enough. Now when I think about rural life, all I think of are bigots, bushbots, religious nuts, right-wing wackos, teabaggers, Palin worshippers, gun nuts - at this point a rural area is the last place I would choose to live, strictly because of the evident butt-ignorance of most who choose to live there. And don't get me started on the South, where the very worst of this demographic seems to be concentrated. You couldn't get me south of the Ohio River at gunpoint.

I think it was always this way in many rural areas - I grew up in a semi-rural area and remember much of this from my youth (even here in soft white, soft bellied Oregon). I admit the first time I went to the south, I was enthralled by everyone's superficial politeness, the beautiful landscape and for sure, their skill at bbq (one of the top fav things I've eaten anywhere in the world - actually, turned out I really loved true Southern food of all kinds, still do:). For me, the excesses of some religions there, the right in your face racist talk and the hidden deep anger hit me like a ton of bricks - there was a certain measure of plain mean spiritedness that was a big turnoff. I used to want to have an extended stay in the South to experience it in more depth (spent my whole youth reading all the big and little southern authors), but after a few trips and much conversation there, well, like you, I'd have to be kidnapped and even then, I'd try to escape it.

Right after the election, I was cheered/shocked by how many times dh went to town and came back with a story of someone having voted for and whole-heartedly supporting Obama, no fooling. Called him practical, intelligent, said this financial mess wasn't of his making but that they had confidence in his common sense and abilities. More stuff along that line, and from people in our ranching cowtown, no less.

I'd call this area "Southern-Lite" attitude-wise. Maybe I put too much stock in the fact that I found anyone supportive of Obama, because right now I feel do feel disgusted and surrounded by this garbage and stupidity, every where I turn it seems. The good news? We are almost self-sustainable (grow food, raise beef, use woodstoves and our wood for heat, venturing into solar, opened up springs, etc) and our nearest neighbors are miles away. If, and that is a big if, you can keep the locals here off the nasty subjects and on the basics, and keep time spent talking at a minimum, there is no problem even for smart ass me. We aren't esp. social (and it is fun to truck friends of like mind in for extended stays), so this isn't a hardship - last winter, we only went "to town" less than 10 times. If I had to depend upon the people here for all my friendship/interaction needs? I'd be gone tomorrow, fact.

It is such an amazing life, more authentic than anything I've ever done, and I will never regret this. I am thankful every morning that I am still not too old to be out here. I've lived in and had extended stays in larger cities overseas, and do miss that; when I can no longer ride a horse, I'll go back. But for this moment, not even an army of Sarah clones could tear me away from this kind of life.

Maybe our schools are failing in providing critical thinking skills. It is true that I run into a lot of this kind of thing in older people like myself, but it is mostly racism that has taken over their whole beings to the point that they cling to it and refuse to listen to anything that challenges that view point. If you don't speak their "language", you simply will never get through. I guess what I want is for them to learn to speak a different language. Most days I feel there is no chance of that happening.

Otoh, though, our local young people don't appear to think at all. Not at all - they don't read, they get frustrated quickly because nothing makes sense to them and they shut down in conversations where they shouldn't be shutting down. Too much information puts them into a coma. It should not be this way - our kids are our future.

But if I think of issues about which I am passionate, my habit is to educate myself on every aspect of an issue possible. If someone were to try to whip up the issue crowd of which I was a part with lies or misleading statements, it would immediately strike a discordant note with me. Like "hey, wait a minute, who are you and why are you going there...". I can be part of something larger, without drinking the kool-aid on every point presented.

Maybe it is only easy to excite certain type people forming certain kinds of crowds. The stupid ones, who are unable or unwilling to think for themselve. I guess I am surprised at how many we have out there at the moment. I have noticed the same thing re these people chanting/raving in support of ideas/programs/platforms that are totally against their own interests. They do not seem to understand that aspect, not even if you provided original documents for them to read for themselves. As if they could read.
