Obama Has No Taste or Sense
Edited on Wed Jul-29-09 09:55 PM by iamjoy
Budweiser? Budweiser? Not only is it a cheap beer, but he missed a great opportunity to be clever.

Sam Adams Boston Lager. You can't go wrong with that - I mean, it's a Boston police officer, so why not have a beer brewed in Boston. It's an American beer (Anheuser Bush is no longer an American company). It's a simple enough beer (not like an obscure microbrew) that no one could accuse Obama of being elitist. Oh, and the company is named after one of our Founding Fathers.

Obama really blew it.

The one with the most class when it comes to beer tomorrow night will be James Crowley

43. Nope. Not for a political stunt.
Inviting Gates and Crowley to the White House is not "just drinking a beer." The OP does have a point, in that the publicized choice of beer must therefore also have some small significance.

Budweiser is Everyman's beer, though, so I suspect that it was chosen for a reason.

I do think he missed a poetic opportunity not getting Sam Adams Boston Lager and I never thought of him as Bud guy but it doesn't really matter. It's more of a comment on the absurdity of the media even focusing on crap when there are really important issues. I probably should have posted it in the Lounge.

That's the only reason I ever drink it. I much prefer my homebrew.

I do hope this is a calibrated move. Budweiser is the most popular brand in the US, so he may be playing it safe. Personally, if he had to go with a US mass marketed beer, he would have been better off with one of the products from the Ommegang Brewery in Cooperstown.

40. It goes back to Chicago politics
Back in the late 70s Jesse Jackson led a campaign against Anheiser-Busch because of lack of diversity. Then, lo and behold, his son gets a franchise, River North Distributors. Then the campaign was ended and Jackson Sr. promoted Bud.

Since then River North has been a very good source of campaign cash for machine politicians.

Bud is the choice of the Chicago machine.

66. I Don't Drink Beer
But I still get beer snobbery. My husband and friends are beer drinkers - preferring microbrews and craft beers. I like beers with good "nose." Most mass produced lagers all smell the same (like horse piss, if you ask me). However, some of the other types of beer are brewed with other ingredients and have very pleasing aromas. They still taste yucky to me.

The funny thing is if you go to many restaurants or bars that have specials on "domestic beer" they don't count Sam Adams as domestic - that's a "craft" beer.

There really is more to brewing good beer than some people think. Maybe it's kind of like tea. You can just throw a bag of regular Lipton in a mug and pour boiling water over it or you can get loose tea with different flavors and make tea properly.

Or, think of it like coffee. Why are some people okay with throwing some instant Maxwell House in a cup and other have to have their Starbuck's?

So it is controlled by American, Canadian and South African interests.

I believe their largest "brewery" is actually the Iron City brewery in Pittsburgh, which contracts to produce Sam Adams.

Most people outside of Pittsburgh know Iron City Light as the nastiest, shittiest beer they've ever had. But there's obviously nothing wrong with the brewery, only the recipe.
