Uh oh Dean staff member admits lying, misrepresenting himself as Iowan
http://www.drudgereport.com/flash7.htm

This is a letter from Kerry to Dean.

My Opinion is that it is a real letter and if the staffers admitted it they are telling the truth and it's wrong to pose as Iowans to try to spy on other campaigns.

2. Poor Tactics By Dean
If this report is true, it is very bad tactics by the Dean campaign. People in Iowa will respond very negatively to such tactics.

4. If this is true
It just means that they are desperate.

If it's true, which considering the source is not likely, then he was doing exactly what the campaigns have been doing to each other for a year in this one, and every other campaign since the beginning of politics.

Cast not the first stone.

6. Second Time? Still not a charm. Doesn't pass the smell test.
The whole set up seems bogus and there is no hard evidence.

Of course, when you are Gephardt, you need to pull every dirty trick you can to save the last bits of your political career.

I see we learned nothing from Helen Thomas.

13. Don't buy it for a minute.
I know Dean people - 'been working with them for months and months and they are, uniformly, of the highest caliber. If this is true - and I am sure its some kind of pre-primary BS - who is to say these people were really "staffers" or not just trouble makers who signed on to cause these kinds of disruptions?
This is a totally "open" campaign - and when something is this open - any nut or "evil doer" can join in and pull some crazy stunt which will embarrass the candidate.

15. The rate-limiting step in this whole story.
Edited on Thu Jan-08-04 09:15 PM by LoZoccolo
Why did these guys just come up and confess? They weren't accused of anything.

I’m distressed to learn that staffers from the Dean campaign are misrepresenting themselves as Iowa caucus-goers to gain advantage against our campaign.

First, if they live in Iowa, they are not misrepresenting themselves as Iowa caucus-goers. There is not one thing in this letter that indicates that these two are not residents of Iowa. There is no mention of where they "actually" came from if they were not Iowa residents. There is no mention that they plan to attend the caucus either. This allegation that they are trying to get into the caucus when they are not Iowa residents is not even substantiated in this letter, much less by any other party.

The leap from "spies" to "people trying to get into the caucus that shouldn't" is a shark sandwich.

Plus it expects people not to see this, and treats them like they are stupid. It is, in and of itself, a dirty trick.

Now, what if we made the same accusation and said if the Kerry campaign is willing to pull this kind of trickery, how how can any Iowa voter trust that his campaign will prevent volunteers from attending the caucus illegitimately on the 19th?

Plus, would the state director of a campaign make these kinds of mistakes writing a letter?

If your folks are lying today, what's to stop them from stealing the caucus from Iowa voters for Howard Dean on January 19th.

This is a question...why isn't there a question mark at the end of it?

16. Did it really happen? Probably not... COULD it have happened?
Yes. That's the bitch, there's no way to disprove it. At its most damning, it's a couple of really misled (and unsanctioned) Dean supporters acting up. My question is: why, if they were "Dean plants" did they go in the NEXT DAY and say they were lying? Does that make ANY sense? I mean, they got their whole act figured out, got the info they were looking for, and then just turned themselves in? What sense does that make?

20. Being involved in the Dean campaign and seeing how we're encouraged
Edited on Thu Jan-08-04 11:46 PM by MercutioATC
to act, I have a hard time believing this story. Here in Cleveland, the Dean campaign has encouraged us to get the word out, but respect the fact that Cleveland is Kucinich's home turf. I have a hard time believing that 1) they'd send in 2 "plants", and 2) they'd pick two morons to do it if they did.

Every experience I've had with the Dean campaign involves respect and truth. I just don't see this happening.

21. Apparently it is true
Meanwhile, the Dean campaign Thursday was forced to fire two low-level volunteers who went into Kerry's campaign offices posing as average voters. Kerry's campaign reacted with outrage. Dean aides said the campaign adheres to strict ethical codes and that the two volunteers were dismissed.

Edited on Fri Jan-09-04 09:25 AM by LoZoccolo
The idea that these were not Iowa residents eligible to participate in caucus was never established. It's still disingenuous to imply that this has anything to do with breaking election rules.

Edited on Fri Jan-09-04 09:44 AM by LoZoccolo
...and don't bother replying if you still don't understand or don't have a specific question about a detail of my argument.

I didn't say that they didn't try to get information about Kerry's campaign or that they didn't lie about being undecided.

What I'm saying, in that message and another one further up the thread, is that it is unsubstantiated that these were people that were trying to get into the caucuses that shouldn't be allowed to. And the letter did not even say that they were from out of state - it wasn't until they were fired that the Dean campaign revealed this.

This whole thing just serves the preconceived notions that Dean opponents have about Dean. If there were a shred of integrity among them, they wouldn't be here spewing their opposition to Dean day in and day out.

31. So if a Kucinich supporter shot someone, Kucinich is to blame?
I don't think so.

Dean staffers reacted immediately and fired the two low level volunteers.

This is stupid... except most of these circular firing squad attacks are stupid why should one be any more intelligent than any of the others.
