Bill Cosby ’shocked’ at Obama’s statement on Harvard prof’s arrest
Edited on Thu Jul-23-09 03:10 PM by masuki bance
On a Boston radio program this morning, Bill Cosby suggested that President Obama spoke too soon on the controversial arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates.

“I’ve heard about five different reports ,” Cosby said on Boston’s WZLX. “If I’m the president of the United States, I don’t care how much pressure people want to put on it about race, I’m keeping my mouth shut.”

“I was shocked to hear the president making this kind of statement,” Cosby said referring to the president’s remarks during last night’s press conference.

The comedian appeared to have dialed his comments back a bit in a later interview on Boston’s FOX 25 television station. Cosby cautioned those from coming up with their own conclusions, but gave the president some leeway.

“People who have not been there, people who don’t know are beginning to have their own personal feelings, but they weren’t there,” Cosby said....

25. Very, and not without irony
My favorite part is going to be watching those who go out of their way to find little-supported contrary opinions in the LGBT community and latch onto them for dear life in their quest to minimize our concerns. Behold as so many of them now claw and climb their way over one another to denounce Cosby.

People never disappoint.

22. Cosby hails Obama, knocks Hannity
Bill Cosby, the entertainer-turned-activist known for his controversial comments on race, told Washington’s WTOP radio station Saturday that Barack and Michelle Obama were examples of the parenting and family values he’s challenged black America to strengthen.

“Who is Barack Obama and what did he tell us, when he talked about his mother? What was it he was saying when he said his mother woke up, 4:30 in the morning…to correct his homework, to get it done?” Cosby asked rhetorically. “Let’s listen to Michelle Obama who talks about her father with a disease, but he doesn’t call in work and say, let me call in later. He gets up an hour earlier.”

“There are statements made which tell us, you know, that people make it because they try,” Cosby said.

Cosby brushed back the criticism that his past comments about African-Americans could be taken out of context by critics of the black community – taking a crack at Fox News commentator Sean Hannity in the process.

“I’m not worried about white people. Hannity – I’m not worried what he says, ” Cosby said. “I’m not worried about any racist people who are going to bring it up.”

29. Bill Cosby thinks the problem with black people is their funny names.
"Isn’t it a sign of something when she’s got her dress all the way up to the crack…and got all kinds of needles and things going through her body. What part of Africa did this come from? . We are not Africans. Those people are not Africans, they don’t know a damned thing about Africa. With names like Shaniqua, Shaligua, Mohammed and all that crap and all of them are in jail. "

Presumably names like "Barack" and "Hussein" and "Malia" are right up there too.

38. Finish the quote! Add the relative part! Don't cherry pick!
"When we give these kinds names to our children, we give them the strength and inspiration in the meaning of those names. What’s the point of giving them strong names if there is not parenting and values backing it up"

Edited on Thu Jul-23-09 03:29 PM by ProSense
The problem with Cosby is he never discusses the full picture: the social implications and ramifications. It's like his current statement: Why the hell does he have a problem with Obama stating his opinion? Could it be that Cosby has a problem with accepting that racism and bigotry exist?

He can make all types of controversial racial statements, but Obama makes a statement and he needs to express his views on Obama's opinion?

103. Actually, he did. here is the transcript
what I think we know separate and apart from this incident is that there is a long history in this country of African Americans and Latinos being stopped by law enforcement disproportionately. That's just a fact.

As you know, Lynn, when I was in the state legislature in Illinois, we worked on a racial profiling bill because there was indisputable evidence that blacks and Hispanics were being stopped disproportionately. And that is a sign, an example of how, you know, race remains a factor in this society. That doesn't lessen the incredible progress that has been made. I am standing here as testimony to the progress that's been made.

And yet the fact of the matter is, is that this still haunts us. And even when there are honest misunderstandings, the fact that blacks and Hispanics are picked up more frequently and oftentime for no cause casts suspicion even when there is good cause. And that's why I think the more that we're working with local law enforcement to improve policing techniques so that we're eliminating potential bias, the safer everybody is going to be.

Three posts on trying to make the idiots who arrested Gates look better? I would not say anything if I thought you actually believed this and it was not because you dislike Obama.

By the way, Bill Cosby is disliked by many in the black community because he blames blacks for all of their problems, as if they caused everything to happen to them. I understand people needing to take responsibility for their own actions but he has said to "stop blaming the white man" as if that was the answer to racism.

A cop can arrest you for disorderly for any reason they deem fit, especially when coroborrated by at least one officer.

The police report and acompanying statements back that up.

58. He was investigating a B&E call in a neighborhood with a recent spat of break-ins.
According to the officer, the first thing Gates said to him was beligerent.

He asked the man for identification and when provided with such, began to retreat and then Gates continued berating him and demanding his name and badge number.

Instead of being asked "Is everything ok? Are you ok? Have you seen anything suspicious?"

Gates was treated as a culprit rather than a homeowner.

104. Link to Report...
From the report, it does seem that the policeman overreacted.

http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2009/0723092gates1.html

The report is not as detailed as it should be. The officer never mentions entering the residence, for example. Also, the officer never says that he gave Professor Gates his identification card or indicated his full name to the professor (in a verifiable form). From reading the report, it seems that the professor did not get the information that he requested and was in the process of demanding it. The officer did not want to provide the information - apparently. Also, it seems that the officer was overly focused on the crowd's reaction to the professor's demands and statements.

To solve such problems in the future, all police officers should be required to wear shoulder-mounted, continuously-on, wireless video recorders, so their actions and statements can be kept track of and stored on watch-dog-group-affiliated servers for analysis - or on YouTube for public analysis for that matter. It would not hurt to have gun and taser cameras either. They should not object to this - such footage and audio would easily clear them of being accused of misconduct on the job should such accusations arise.

It seems likely that President Obama's statement was quite accurate - read the report above.

Re-enactment for dramatic purposes only:
("Damn, do I look bad in front of everybody? Maybe, I better whip out the cuffs, escalate the situation, arrest him and save face. Done, done, done and DONE! (whispered to the professor) You dare question me?! You wanted my ID - well, fuck you, now you have it on the arrest report. You're going downtown.")

61. charges dropped
so it seems the arrest was not sustainable. Meanwhile the police report appears to be officially a secret and unofficially leaked in two different versions. You may have read something, but it is now quite questionable as to what the actual incident report is, why there are multiple versions floating around, and why the Cambridge PD has put an FOIA block on the official document.

the official incident report is not being released. The one on that site is one of two that have made it to the internets. When incident reports get rewritten anyone who did not have doubts about the veracity of the police report to begin with ought to concede that 'there are problems with the official story', at the least.

That's not true. Cosby has had problems here on DU since well before Obama. See his speech on the anniversary of B v. Board.

And, what is your question? Would I care one way or the other what Cosby was saying? I doubt Cosby would have been given a platform if he had agreed with Obama. There are many authors that do agree with Obama that are not being interviewed.

You answered your own question and the only reason this is posted here is because Bill Cosby is black.

It makes bigots feel better about themselves because they can say "look, a black man agrees with me."

And if Oprah (or some other prominent African-American) came out and said she agreed with the president I guarantee the poster would NOT post it, but if she said what Bill Cosby said the poster would post it in a heartbeat.

It's akin to saying "I'm not a bigot because I have black friends."

110. Bill Cosby was asked by WBZ 4 for his opinion. He gave it.
If he was white, he comment would be no more or less relevant. There is a question as to whether he would have been asked, but that's not the issue at hand.

You're arguing that it isn't good to have two sides of a story on a news report. That is bull shit. And unethical.

If Oprah were asked, she could answer. Yet if she used her show to do so it would still be unethical and tactless. It puts here in a position in influence the just outcome of this case or any case, whatever that may be. Like with Obama or Cosby, she would have an uninformed opinion having not been there. But unlike Cosby who was asked, to proselytize on national television is wrong. It was wrong for Obama because he is biased for knowing one of the parties and he wasn't there. It would be wrong for Oprah because she wasn't there and has no knowledge (that I know of) of legal procedures.

My statement has nothing to do with race. Period. I don't care if you don't believe me. I don't care what you think. But I'm not going to stand by and take BS from people who don't know what they're talking about.

Obama didn't "proselytize on national television" and he admitted he didn't know all the facts and he admitted he was "biased" because he knows Professor Gates.

All President Obama did was state his opinion after he was asked a question. He didn't state it as fact. He did nothing wrong. Even presidents are allowed to have opinions, just like you and me.

This is a made-up controversy and nothing else.

It was tactless.

Cosby had been asked. It was not (heretofore) broadcast nationally. It was not with the weight of the presidency behind him. It was by a former television star with a Ed.D in education, specifically dealing with race relations. ("The Integration of Visual Media Via Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids Into the Elementary Schools Culminating as a Teacher Aid to Achieve Increased Learning." was his doctoral thesis.)

And of course the resident apologists are always looking for the few black people who agree with them on an issue where the majority of black people on this board have made their opinion known in the opposite direction.

As to Mr. Cosby who has never managed to say much that doesn't fit in with certain white people's rather low opinion of black people; I'll just repeat what Eddie Murphy said Richard Pryor said to him vis a vis Cosby not liking something Eddie Murphy said.
