Here is my take on the police comment ....
Edited on Thu Jul-23-09 12:16 AM by TheCoxwain
It is a countermeasure ......

like the way you deploy a flare ( police acted stupidly) to get a missile off its intended target ( the health reform)..

The media is going to go nuts over it ....and I suspect that is what the president wants .... so that he and the congress can quietly go about getting the business done.

1. I don't think so.
He was responding to a question, he answered it truthfully. It wasn't some plan.

3. he is always careful about what he says ..especially about race .... am sure this must have
come up during the preperations ..

I bet that a detailed foray into the case was deliberate

12. I tend to agree with you in that the President weighs what he is about...
to say, in answer to any questions, and there was little hesitation in his comment. He said what he wanted to say. As to why, it could be many things, imo. It could be to use the 'bully pulpit' to highlight racial profiling still exists or, indeed, to give the media a 'cause celebre' to obsess over while leaving those responsible for getting the work done on healthcare with less of a spotlight. It could actually be a combination of both.

4. My comment: Obama is the chief law enforcement officer in the country.
And if he says some lesser, racist, stupid law enforcement officer is stupid, well that's his call.

5. Brilliant, schedule 9 speeches in the past 9 days on health reform
convince the networks to give him an hour of primetime to hammer health reform home, but slip in, on the last question, an answer that will distract everybody from health reform.

Pure Genius.

13. You may not have noticed the MSM is NOT an ally for healthcare reform
Better to have them chasing the shiny new Gates "controversy" object than trying to drive down public opinion on Healthcare.

14. The media WAS NOT his target audience, in that press conference...
and the others, the American people were to whom he was speaking. He already knows full well that, regardless of what he says, the media will distort it.

6. Did Everyone Forget What He Said Before He Answered the Question
He said that Professor Gates was a friend of his. So I'm thinking that he is going to be on his friend's side and is allowed to give his opinion "that the police acted stupidly".

But the media is going to go nuts over it but I suspect that the President will not walk the statement back and neither will Robert Gibbs at tomorrow's briefing. This is personal...

like we seem to do with some other things.

11. No, I just don't feel compelled to start a new thread to detail them.
Besides, there are really very few original opinions expressed here.

15. Then what are you doing on a discussion forum mate?
Edited on Fri Jul-24-09 09:42 AM by TheCoxwain
I thought the whole idea was exchange of thoughts among people who largely have common aims.

Am I missing something? Unless scoring cheap points is your game - I dont quite understand what are you trying to say. Do you want me shut up, unless I have something to say that is of earth shattering significance?

16. Simple, I am posting to a thread which already exists.
If there are already numerous threads which already cover a subject, why should I feel compelled to start a new one? I don't want anyone to shut up, but it would be nice if more DUers would actually post to an existing thread rather than constantly starting a new one. This thread is a good example of something which could have been posted to many already existing threads.
