An honest to the heart question.. can "you", or "we"..handle the drop in the polls?
Edited on Wed Jul-22-09 06:57 PM by Peacetrain
While the President is wildly personally popular... a drop in the polls in his popularity is going to happen..

When we press for health care, there is going to be a drop, and lots of OH NOES from the media.

A person has to ask themselves.. Am I ready for this? It is easy to be a supporter at 60% plus.. but when the numbers drop below 50%, as they will.. that is when the rubber meets the road.

That is when it is about policy.

We are going to win this, but it will not be without some carnage.

Smoke them if you got them.

EDIT TO ADD:
Pelosi Says She Has Votes to Pass House Health Plan

By James Rowley and Kristin Jensen

July 22 (Bloomberg) -- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she has the votes to pass legislation overhauling the U.S. health- care system as Democratic Party leaders moved closer to an agreement with rebellious members of their own party.

Leaders are “making progress” with Democrats who want more cost cuts in the legislation, Pelosi told reporters in Washington today, a day after President Barack Obama met with a group of Democrats to try to convince them to back the plan.

“I have no question we have the votes on the floor of the House to pass this legislation,” Pelosi said.

3. The GOP will throw their poop in Obama's direction, hoping that it will stick,

but it will not drive down his numbers that far.

People are in "Summer mode" and not paying that much attention.

Once the people start paying more attention come this Fall then they will realize that the party of NO has not done anything except complain about the President.

Let them try and promote something of value. They won't

And that will be the GOP's waterloo.

9. I consider low to mid 50's to be good poll numbers for a President
I think they should only go into the high 60's and beyond as circumstances warrant (i.e. honeymoon period, national tragedy, passage of and signing major popular legislation, etc.). If everyone is a little bit unhappy but the overall happiness outweighs unhappiness then you're comfortably in the 50's. Of course, you are right, there will likely be times when it dips below that. I'm pretty confident that the administration will be able to steady the course and work through those bumps. Honestly, his poll numbers don't concern me in the least. I felt the same way during the Clinton years - he'll weather whatever storms come his way.

13. His popularity is a part of the political capital that he must spend.
Anything he manages to accomplish will be roasted by the MSM, and his approval rating will drop. This is, indeed, going to happen.

14. Wouldn't bother me so much if...
there were a corollary of the question presented to us. It's always presented, "Do you support the President on topic X, Y, Z." They, the MSM, should add whether President Obama OR the Repubs in Congress are trusted more on the same topics. But that doesn't fit into their story formulas, it appears.
