In case you missed it: Peggy Noonan trashes failing, flailing Sarah Palin!
Edited on Thu Jul-16-09 06:42 PM by zulchzulu
I was having a cold one with my Republican friend with ties to the RNC and we started talking politics. He's a moderate for the most part.

Palin came up.

He never liked her or couldn't pin down why he thought she was a political weakling, but his wife (also a Republican) called him while he was on some golf junket (he was a former golf pro) to tell him to check out some article on Palin in the Wall Street Journal by the ever-beloved Reagan speechwriter, Peggy Noonan. She (his wife) sort of liked her as a mother, but there was always something afoul with Palin in her view. She advised my friend that "Peggy nailed it on Sarah". Here is but a snippet of the absolute trashing of Palin by Noonan.

What a glorious circular firing squad flame thrower of an article!

A Farewell to Harms
Palin was bad for the Republicans—and the republic.

Sarah Palin's resignation gives Republicans a new opportunity to see her plain—to review the bidding, see her strengths, acknowledge her limits, and let go of her drama. It is an opportunity they should take. They mean to rebuild a great party. They need to do it on solid ground.
AP

Her history does not need to be rehearsed at any length. Ten months ago she was embraced with friendliness by her party. The left and the media immediately overplayed their hand, with attacks on her children. The party rallied round, as a party should. She went on the trail a sensation but demonstrated in the ensuing months that she was not ready to go national and in fact never would be. She was hungry, loved politics, had charm and energy, loved walking onto the stage, waving and doing the stump speech. All good. But she was not thoughtful. She was a gifted retail politician who displayed the disadvantages of being born into a point of view (in her case a form of conservatism; elsewhere and in other circumstances, it could have been a form of liberalism) and swallowing it whole: She never learned how the other sides think, or why.

In television interviews she was out of her depth in a shallow pool. She was limited in her ability to explain and defend her positions, and sometimes in knowing them. She couldn't say what she read because she didn't read anything. She was utterly unconcerned by all this and seemed in fact rather proud of it: It was evidence of her authenticity. She experienced criticism as both partisan and cruel because she could see no truth in any of it. She wasn't thoughtful enough to know she wasn't thoughtful enough. Her presentation up to the end has been scattered, illogical, manipulative and self-referential to the point of self-reverence. "I'm not wired that way," "I'm not a quitter," "I'm standing up for our values." I'm, I'm, I'm.

In another age it might not have been terrible, but here and now it was actually rather horrifying.

McCain-Palin lost. Mrs. Palin has now stepped down, but she continues to poll high among some members of the Republican base, some of whom have taken to telling themselves Palin myths.

1. So how can Noonan be so right about this and so totally goofball wrong about Bush?
How can someone be so smart, even to knowing history then be so goddamned insanely wrong about other things??

Head scratcher...

10. Peggy is a Federalist type.
Bush came from a blue blooded background, therefore Peggy thinks he is worthy of being Pres. Sarah Palin is a lowly peasant as far as she is concerned, and peasants have no business running the country.

Stupid is OK if you have the right family background. :sarcasm:

14. Because She's Sexist
Peggy Noonan is sexist. That is a fact. However, Bush also had great (good at their jobs) people around him, which Palin doesn't have. Bush also had a clear objective. Palin doesn't have that. But if Bush were a woman, Peggy wouldn't care for him.

2. Ha ha ha!!! Too bad Sarah never had her pic taken with Ronnie!
The cognitive dissonance would have been profound for pouty Peggy!

As it is, this sounds like old fashioned cattiness--the kind that has gone out of fashion in this era:

What she is, is a seemingly very nice middle-class girl with ambition, appetite and no sense of personal limits.

....She makes the party look stupid, a party of the easily manipulated.

....Her lack of any appropriate modesty did her in. ....

Peggy's off her game. That's kind of schlocky and scattershot, even for her. Sure, Palin's a putz, but that opus is not just a little trashy, it's all over the page.

We are the absolute polar opposite in everything but sarah palin. This guy is one of those christian right wing pro corporate gun right freaks. He usually brings the bible as facts when referring to absolutely anything. He feels as if CEOs or being treated unfairly by obama(who he calls a racist communist). He's paranoid that Obama will one day stop outside his house to take his guns, and thinks homosexuals should repent their sins or burn in hell for "eternity".But when I bring up sarah palin(who he supported during the election) in the conversation,he tells me to stop right there, because he thinks she a quote on quote walking idiot nutjob. Also claims that she was never fit to VP,and how she has to much family problems that aren't representing his christian values.

4. Judges 1:19 perhaps you will find this an amusing debate topic
about Yahweh being defeated by a people because they ran him over with an iron chariot; sounds like He is similar to faeries, with the iron allergies going on.

6. Crushing. And these two paragraphs say it all
"The elites hate her." The elites made her. It was the elites of the party, the McCain campaign and the conservative media that picked her and pushed her. The base barely knew who she was. It was the elites, from party operatives to public intellectuals, who advanced her and attacked those who said she lacked heft. She is a complete elite confection. She might as well have been a bonbon."

"She can memorize the names of the presidents of Pakistan, but she is not going to be able to know how to think about Pakistan. Why do her supporters not see this? Maybe they think "not thoughtful" is a working-class trope!"

Damn. I don't know if Palin read this or not but if she did, she's got to be bleeding from the sharp, cutting words of ol' Peggy. Even *I* was cut after reading that.

that the GOPers keep telling themselves in order to avoid realizing what a stupid mistake they made nominating her.

11. Unfortunately the people who really need to read this article will never see it. The anti-intellec-
tuals don't read stuff from elite authors like Noonan.
