Chavez accuses U.S. of coup role as ties restored

Just days after reestablishing diplomatic ties with Venezuela, President Hugo Chavez is accusing the U.S. of staging a coup in Honduras as President Obama expressed concern over President Manuel Zelaya's arrest.

Zelaya was arrested and forced into exile on Sunday after pressing ahead with a constitutional referendum that would have allowed for his re-election. The referendum had been judged illegal by Honduras' highest court and was opposed widely through political and military circles. Zelaya had fired the chief of the country's armed forces, Romeo Vásquez Velásquez, when he refused to help with the referendum.

Soldiers took away Zelaya, still in his pajamas, from the presidential palace Sunday morning and put him on a plane to San Jose, Costa Rica, where he planned to seek political asylum.

Chavez, who succeeded on his second try to push a similar referendum that allows his indefinite re-election, lashed out at the U.S. and Obama in Caracas, alleging "the Yankee empire had a lot to do" with the "coup d'etat" against his fellow leftist leader.

"I call on the president of the United States to issue a statement as we have, rejecting this affront, which not only goes against Honduras but against all the peoples of Latin America," Chavez said.

2. Chavez or his ally Zelaya?
Over the past year, Zelaya has alienated Honduras’s political and business elite by aligning with the Chavez-led group of socialist Latin American leaders, Berkman said. Opposition presidential candidate Porfirio Lobo, who lost the 2005 race, said in a statement on the National Party Web site last month that Zelaya’s aim is to scrap the country’s one-term limit so he can run again. link to Bloomberg article(emphasis added)

Zelaya, who was elected as a conservative, has shifted dramatically to the left during his presidency.

He is the latest in a long list of Latin American leaders, including Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, to seek constitutional changes to expand presidential powers and also ease term limits. http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-world/troops-oust-honduran-president-in-feared-coup-20090628-d1cf.html">link to Syndey Morning Herald article

6. Hugophile here, reporting for duty!
I happen to think that countries should be allowed to change their constitutions.

You know, like the US has done.

3. DAMN that Hugo Chavez for besmirching . . .
Uncle Sam's unblemished name! It's common knowledge to anyone with half a brain that the United States of America has never and will never be involved in staging a coup d'etat against the leader of another country.
The very thought sickens me!

10. hugo's become a bit of a bore with his games
and yes, I believe it's unlikely that the U.S. was involved in this coup. In any case, it's not difficult to see what Chavez is up to here. Fortunately, Obama is too smart to get sucked in to Hugo's games.

4. Hugo has no credibility.
If it wasn't apparent to people before, certainly his statements on the Iranian situation make that abundantly clear.

9. Hugo's insult on Obama after their initial talks a couple months ago was enough for me.
You don't have talks, say he sounded sincere, then spout a list of demands and say that if they're not met, all those words said become falsities. Manipulative little guy, Chavez is. Though I still like his hair...

12. Zelaya told CNN En Espanol (Mirador Mundial) that Obama supports him and that Obama is a Socialist!
Edited on Sun Jun-28-09 11:24 PM by SuperTrouper
Then when anchorwoman Susana Palacios challenged him on his unpopularity in Honduras and that he violated Honduran law over and over again, Zelaya became unhinged and attacked CNN as a "fascist" organization...Zelaya is a liar. Zelaya is mentally unstable. Zelaya wants to drag the US and Obama into this mess. Zelaya=Chavez. I as a Honduran-American, a Liberal Obama Democrat thank God that Zelaya is gone and hope that Liberal President Roberto Micheletti does a good job for the next 5 months to restore peace and dignity to the Central American nation. Elections will occur again as scheduled on 11/29/09. The two main Presidential candidates in Honduras support the decision in Honduras and for that matter (not that it is important) the Catholic and Evangelical churches of the country support the expulsion of Zelaya. These two churches locked heads against Zelaya for human rights abuses and for trying to turn Honduras into his own personal Hacienda.
