I don't think a lot of people understand the health care debate and the "options"
that are being bounced around. I consider myself pretty well informed on this issue, especially since my kids were denied their renewed CHIPS benefits in January 2009. I have a big stake in this debate like so many other Americans and their families who don't have health care and who live on the edge daily worrying about something happening, but I have to admit that I get lost in the "options" thrown around. Doing some research, I can figure out, "single payer" and "public option" but the average American just trying to get by, won't always do the leg work to figure out what is best for them. So they listen to FOX news or some other media and before long there is so much public opinion, but there is no truth.

I think we need clarity, especially for those like me and my family who are just trying to make it day by day. Maybe an ongoing reference ...

Just throwing some ideas out there...

1. a good suggestion.

I know I need all the help I can get to keep up with all the issues.

Have to admit that I have a lot of stress fatigue left over from the last 8 years.

3. I'm Right There With You
But it is more than clarity needed. Those with good insurance can't imagine that theirs could change, so they don't even listen to the debate. How do we convince people that life can change in a NY minute???

5. TRue, but also remember that most Americans support the public option, it is the average American
politician who does not.

7. very true...

But when we hear people like Sen. Grassley spewing, "absolutely no public option," laced with his distorted "reasons", it's one more arguement that has to be clarified to reach the truth.

I've talked to several people who fear "public option" because they hear the word, "government run" rather than the word "option".

This will continue to be the biggest problem toward achieving universal health care. Unfortunately, the "little people" mean nothing to these big insurance corps and their flock. I guess they look at it as "survival of the fittest," which seems to be the common mantra for keeping the "little guy" down.

They seem to forget. The "little guy" had a big voter turnout last November, so WHY do these republican representatives keep the debate turned their way?

I just don't get it.

9. They only support it because they feel it will cost them less
The devil is in the details. Most people will support a public option given that the level of coverage will be the same, IF the coverage also costs them less. If it will cost them more, they'll tell you to go screw.

12. And for most of them, it will cost a lot less for a better coverage.

6. Even doing research, you probably aren't going to be able to pin down what a "public option" is
Edited on Wed Jun-24-09 12:34 PM by Oregone
There really is not clarity in that entire matter, and there hasn't been for months. Its a new ambiguous creation that is being formed based on polling results in reaction to potential policy leaks. Yet it is what everyone has been asked to come out and support. Notice how it is called an "option" rather than an insurer (so it can also be a co-op/hmo/or whatever run by a public body). The entire concept couldn't be much more unclear. Its the perfect language for a bait and switch to shut everyone up.

11. Simple explanation even a FAUX noise viewer could understand
(though you'll never hear this on FAUX....)

Single Payer - Best

True Public Option - Acceptable

Anything less than that - WORSE than what we have now
