Obama Takes the Girls For Frozen Custard (OK, I know, I know - but I like it)
Edited on Sat Jun-20-09 07:14 PM by Faygo Kid
On the eve of Father's Day, the First Father showed how it's done, taking his daughters Malia and Sasha for some frozen treats at The Dairy Godmother, a boutique custard parlor in Alexandria.

President Obama and his girls motorcaded over to Alexandria from the White House this afternoon. Malia had a waffle cone of vanilla custard and Sasha had her vanilla custard in a cup. The president enjoyed a cup of vanilla custard with hot fudge and toasted almonds, a pool reporter was told by the shopkeeper. The three were in the shop for about 15 minutes, where they sat at a table to enjoy their snacks.

As they left, the trio received applause from the staff and customers inside and a small crowd outside. Carrying a bag of frozen "puppy pops" for the First Dog, Bo, Obama waved to the crowd before stepping into his SUV for the short jaunt back to the White House. http://voices.washingtonpost.com/44/?hpid=topnews

I know he has more important things to do than take his daughters for frozen custard and "puppy pops" for Bo. But as a Dad and dog owner myself, I can't think of many on a Saturday night before Father's Day.

Plus, I like the bold move for hot fudge and toasted almonds. Be that bold on health care, Mr. President!

2. Good for him. Most people can't take their kids out for custard, because they lack health coverage..
needed in case their kids kid food poisoning. Its nice to be rich, and have both health coverage and life privileges.

(yes, a tad thick in hyperbole. I'm not sure what my point is. I think I'm going to criticize his fuzzy articles until normal people have coverage too)

6. Yes -- "He doesn't see all the pain, it's so tragic out here,"
Edited on Sat Jun-20-09 08:32 PM by Oregone
Obama's Doctor says. "Obama's wonderful, but on this one I'm not sure if he's getting the right input."

Look, people are in pain. Fluff stories don't address people's pain (and deaths/bankruptcy). Some people, because of their wealth and coverage, get to enjoy life longer and more. Some people die. With every smile, shouldn't we also remember that this is enabled because of wealth and status? With every smile, shouldn't we also remember the frowns? My feelings for those suffering takes precedence over my ability to laugh and feel good at the moment. America needs real health care, not happy stories about people who are fortunate to have it.

With that said, I did mention hyperbole.

9. Its not a fluff story, he is living his life. My husband takes our kids out for
icecream all the time, its just no one cares about us because we are not the first family. I think you need to chill a bit.

Do we want him to be Superman or down to earth and real? Geez, some around here apparently cannot make up their minds.

17. Well congrats, you must have good health care too
The rest of America is hunkered down at home with their kids, too worried about anything that will put then in the hospital. If only everyone had Obama's healthcare

24. I just went to an ice cream shop today...saw many parents there eating ice cream and snowballs with
their children. So are we to assume that all of them are covered? Because I don't have healthcare, but I will sure as hell enjoy my 1.50 snowball.

25. LOL. I am a diabetic. I guess I should stay at home and never come out for fear
that if something really bad happened to me the costs in the hospital would be really, really high. I have health care through my husband but there was a point where we both had nothing, after college. We have been there. I get it. Even with health insurance the costs to treat my disease suck. The medication has consistently gone up the last 5 years since I was diagnosed. The problem is I still don't see what taking out his kids for ice cream has to do with pushing for the kind of health care you specifically would want. We are hardly wealthy and last time we went to DQ it was like $6.00 to treat our kids to some dairy treats. We would do that at least once a summer regardless if we had health insurance or not. Kids need to have some kind of fun in their childhood. I suppose next you will say that I should never ever let my kids have any kind of treat because I have diabetes so they will get it too. Welcome to the fun police.

28. The rest of America probably goes out for ice cream too
It explains why all those ice cream stores exist.

Geez, maybe he should move his family onto the streets - there are homeless people out there too.

26. you can get a kid size ice cream cone for like $1.25. bob takes the kids
once in awhile. we splurge and let them get sprinkles even. you don't have to be rich to go get an ice cream cone once in awhile. probably find enough change in your couch to cover the cost.

Jon Stewart recommended that he check out a certain restaurant if he should find himself in Pittsburgh. During the commercial break, I tried to check out the restaurant's web site--but couldn't due to a traffic overload!

can't be easy, and remember, they didn't ask for this. The president and first lady are to be commended for their superior parenting, and the great role models they've become. Happy Father's Day Mr. President.

And on Saturday, Obama offered up an example of being a dad. He doesn't just talk the talk, he walks the walk.

Oh, and he brought a doggy bag home for Bo! :loveya:
