More Participants Drop Out of Gay DNC Fundraiser
The latest on the flailing gay DNC fundraiser as more attendees drop out
by: Pam Spaulding
Fri Jun 19, 2009 at 06:24:44 AM EDT

I've been out of the loop for the last 24+ hours, so a lot has happened regarding 1) the blowback on the DOMA brief, and 2) the meltdown of the gay DNC fundraiser next week, as the list of those bailing on the gala hosted by Barney Frank, Tammy Baldwin and Jared Polis featuring VP Joe Biden.

Here are a few links for you (and me, since I have to catch up):

* Jared Polis, to his credit, turned down an invitation to attend the Obama dog-and-pony signing ceremony.

* Journalist Karen Ocamb has a piece worth the click at Huff Post, "Will Gays Divorce the Democrats?"

* Sean Bugg also supports a boycott of the fundraiser -- see "Obama's small first step"

Lots more at the link, including comments from local favorite Andrew Sullivan and Stampp Corbin: http://www.pamshouseblend.com/diary/11559/the-latest-on-the-flailing-gay-dnc-fundraiser-as-more-attendees-drop-out

12. They just had a fundraiser for $1,000 a plate, but since it's not the GAY
fundraiser, I guess it doesn't count.

You should be careful about this sort of thing, lest you end up looking foolish.

9. I find it distressing that even on our side, legislation is influenced by
donations.

It does seem to me that the GLBT agenda didn't advance until it became evident that they were huge players in the political contribution arena.

Our political system is whacked. Really.

The NBJC just dropped out too. Looks like nearly half the guest list is not coming now. That's a powerful message. I hope everyone keeps the pressure on.

15. Money is the only hing that matters in American politics,
so let's hope they keep threatening to hang onto the cash. That's the only way to get results.

OK, join the Log Cabin Republicans. They sure have a good track record getting the Republican Party not to be anti-gay... yeah, take it from them...

Sheesh. Who cares who drops out of a fundraiser. It probably means they don't have the bucks to be on the list in the first place.

18. Keep telling yourself that
some of the wealthiest, most prolific fundraisers for our party happen to be gay and have dropped out of that fundraiser. Bruce Bastian who made a fortune off of Word Perfect and has given to Democratic causes for years, David Mixner who was such a huge fundraiser for Bill Clinton he was appointed Treasurer of the Democratic party he endorsed Obama in the primaries and fundraised heavily for him (I bet he is sorry now), Stephen Gill who all but single handedly bought Democratic control of Colorado and Iowa's legislature for Democrats just to name three people, none of whom are even close to broke who are staying home from this fundraiser.
