Yes, that's the millimeter-deep view
Listen a little closer and you'll see that Maher was using ironic juxtaposition to make an important point: why is it that a barely-housebroken, unlettered, sociopathic moron could bulldoze through any policy he wanted while our shiny new Harvard-educated constitutional scholar best-public-speaker-since-MLK president seems content to nibble around the edges?

Why is that?

4. What did he say?
Edited on Tue Jun-16-09 11:07 AM by FrenchieCat
Didn't see it, but I heard that he said that Obama was chicken shit and should be more like Georgie. I Also heard that he said that Obama campaigned on Single Payer, or something like that, and then Maher compared the President to celebrity Lindsey Lohan whose face is always on television, but who has doesn't shit to date (paraphrasing).

If that's the truth as you see it, then I will respectfully disagree.....cause those items above are all lies.

This is not what I voted for," Maher said. “I don’t want my president to be a TV star.”

Maher criticized Obama's constant television coverage ("I get it: you love being on TV") and said the president should focus on fixing the nation's problems instead.

"You don't have to be on television every minute of every day -- you're the president, not a rerun of 'Law & Order,'" Maher said. “TV stars are too worried bout being popular and too concerned about being renewed."

Maher continued: "You're skinny and in a hurry and in love with a nice lady -- but so is Lindsay Lohan. And just like Lindsay, we see your name in the paper a lot but we're kind of wondering when you’re actually going to do something.”

Maher added that Obama's presidential rival John McCain was right to say Obama acted like a celebrity and, amazingly for Maher, the comedian suggested Obama needs to act more like his predecessor.

“I never thought I’d say this, what needs in his personality is a little George Bush.”

And it's the point we've been making about Democrats for years: stop playing nice. The vast majority of the population either agrees with Obama or wants him to be even more to the left. It's time to stop consensus-building and start using the power we gave him.

doesn't make it so.

Barack Obama didn't win kicking ass, he won kicking minds.

As for what will be in the next 3 1/2 years, time will tell,
not Bill Maher.

PS. Please note that Maher can believe what he wants,
and I can choose not to watch his show.

I also disagree with his views on religion, on what women are good for,
and about marriage and children.

In otherwords, Bill Maher doesn't impress me.

25. We could say the same thing about every poster here
That's why we call it "opinion".

We all have opinions on why Obama won -- there were a lot of reasons (not being Hillary Clinton or John McCain had a lot to do with it). Most of us on the left supported him with the express intention to drag him out of the center once he got elected.

Agreement with a public figure does not necessarily mean hero worship.

On the other hand, hero worship of a public figure usually does. Those posters rarely agree or disagree with anyone on substance; they just attack the messenger. In their case, the "hero worship" designation is well-earned.

You are allowing yourself subjective latitude while denying it to others.

If you believe that agreement with a public figure does not necessarily mean hero worship, and
then call others hero worshipers, I think you are standing on shaky ground.

He let that vapid asshole PJ O'Rourke simply take over his panel last week. Once again Maher shows his fear of talking back to a right winger. It's a familiar pattern, it happens almost every week. Maher can say what he wants about Obama, I don't care about that, but he should stand up to the douchebags he invites on the show.

And that particular douchebag should never be asked back. He didn't contribute one thing to the discussion, just kept interrupting everybody with cutesy remarks. Just another rich republican trust fund baby like bow tie boy.

On second thought I don't really give a fuck. Maher can have whoever he wants on his show, I just won't be watching it anymore.

Bush acted like a petulant child and abused our system to the point of almost breaking us. I understand why he said what he did and my emotion feels the same way - I am impatient to see all of this fixed and now. I also believe things can be done by not being a total dickhead and abusing our system.

I agree with the frustration - I just don't want abuse like we had it.

republicans in their place. Nobody is advocating any abuses of the system. You're disagreeing with something that's not even being said. The republicans are at their lowest position in decades if now is not the time to push our agenda. When is it? He doesn't have to eavesdrop on them or torture anyone to get things done and put them on the defensive for a change. Every single one of their ideas is bankrupt both figuratively and literally. If he needs to remind the country of that every time he opens his mouth so be it.

Shit, if he wants health care reform for example. Why not start at a more "extreme" point scare the shit out of the repukes then get the "compromise" he wanted in the first place. There's nothing abusive about that. It's politics.

but his rants can be amusing and there's a shred of truth in what he says.

He doesn't have all the facts in place, but he had a point in that Obama shouldn't settle for crappy legislation and call a weak compromise "reform".

But Maher also doesn't understand political reality and lives in a little Hollywood bubble of his own.

39. These are times
that not only allow for, but almost require, bold, decisive, outside the box moves. This is what FDR did.

Obama is instead working with the same paradigm that created the mess we're in, playing by the same rules, and staying close to the agenda of the corporations. That is what Herbert Hoover did.

All I saw Maher doing was asking Obama to take his good ideas -- the ones we heard in the campaign -- and put a little audacity behind them. He has a window of opportunity to act boldly. He has a lot of goodwill and support. That will erode over time. So, he needs to act quickly. He's not doing that. He's too calculating by half. He could be another Hoover.,

I don't always agree with him -- but how could anyone? Even Maher?

57. Lawrence O Donnell just demolished Maher's argument on MSNBC
Edited on Tue Jun-16-09 12:33 PM by grantcart

His argument was that Bush didn't jam anything threw at all. Congress passed what it wanted.

It wanted to be found supportive of the war it voted for the war.

It wanted to pass deficits, it passed it.

When Bush made revamping social security his #1 priority in his second term, he couldn't even get hearings on it.

When Clinton tried to ram through a health bill, they didn't get a single page passed.

Obama knows that if he is going to get anything passed he has to persuade Congress, 'jamming' gets headlines but it doesn't get anything actually passed.

58. Interesting. Can't wait to see the video on that
O'Donnell usually has some good points, but he's been a bit too cautious for me in the past. I'll check back when/if the vid gets posted here.

I don't always agree with him, but the dude always shows up ready for a fight. Gotta love that.

62. OK, a bit over the top, but you get points for spirit
The scary part is, we won't be sure if he's letting us down until he actually lets us down. At that point, it will be too late.

I'd rather be loud now and pleasantly surprised later.

65. Phew! Thank you!
Now if I can get the smoke to stop blowing out of my ears.

Actually I don't agree that Maher is a Nazi stooge and all the rest.

He's far from perfect, but he is often very funny and he speaks the truth more than 98% of the doofuses who have air time. And he spoke it last Friday night, although I wish he'd included the continued "war on terror", the continued disappearance of civil rights, and the lack of support for gays.

72. I watch Bill Maher religiously as I do Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow.
Agreeing with people 100% of the time isn't a criteria for me. I watch them because they occasionally have moments of sheer brilliance. I don't agree with his shots at celebrity and suggesting Obama emulate his predecessor, but I have no problem with anybody applying a respectful cattle prod to Obama to nudge him along. I hope I haven't thrown a monkey wrench into your one size fits all opinion critique.

All I'm objecting to is the "with us or agin' us" approach. We should be a bit more nuanced on the left.

find it inexplicable that anyone would find anything that RW douche says funny. Apparently Maher thinks he's hilarious though.
