Hey, Scarborough-wanna take back your rants against DHS's concerns about white hate groups?
Edited on Wed Jun-10-09 02:17 PM by EffieBlack
From Media Matters:

On the April 15 edition of MSNBC's Morning Joe, host Joe Scarborough distorted an April 7 intelligence assessment by the Department of Homeland Security to allege that the Obama administration is "specifically warning that veterans returning home from war, are to be feared -- that they could be right-wing extremists that want to launch terror attacks on America." In fact, the document, issued to law enforcement officials, warned of a possible resurgence among extremist groups that "will attempt to recruit and radicalize returning veterans in order to exploit their skills and knowledge derived from military training and combat." The assessment further stated: "The willingness of a small percentage of military personnel to join extremist groups during the 1990s because they were disgruntled, disillusioned, or suffering from the psychological effects of war is being replicated today." DHS cited a 2008 FBI report -- authored during the Bush administration -- as evidence that "some returning military veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have joined extremist groups."

On Morning Joe, Scarborough also said, "I just ask this question to my Democratic friends out there -- and I'm serious about this -- what would you have said if George Bush, Karl Rove, and the head of Homeland Security had issued a report warning about left-wing radicals wanting to blow up America? ... t is frightening." In fact, DHS did issue an assessment on January 26, concluding that "a number of emerging trends point to leftwing extremists maturing and expanding their cyber attack capabilities over the next decade with the aim of attacking targets in the United States." Indeed, in response to a similar claim by conservative radio host Roger Hedgecock, CNN homeland security correspondent Jeanne Meserve reported during the April 14 edition of Lou Dobbs Tonight: "In fact, in January, there was a warning about left-wing extremists. It was issued by the Obama administration but both reports were begun under President Bush."

In its April 7 assessment, DHS stated, "Returning veterans possess combat skills and experience that are attractive to rightwing extremists. DHS/I&A is concerned that rightwing extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize returning veterans in order to boost their violent capabilities." As Media Matters for America has noted, in the July 2008 FBI report, titled "White Supremacist Recruitment of Military Personnel since 9/11," the FBI's Counterterrorism Division determined with "igh confidence" that "ilitary experience is found throughout the white supremacist extremist movement as the result of recruitment campaigns by extremist groups and self-recruitment by veterans sympathetic to white supremacist causes." The 2008 report further stated that a "review of FBI white supremacist extremist cases from October 2001 to May 2008 identified 203 individuals with confirmed or claimed military service active in the extremist movement at some time during the reporting period," and that "ccording to FBI information, an estimated 19 veterans (approximately 9 percent of the 203) have verified or unverified service in the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan."

Sounds to me like the Homeland Security Department was dead on in its assessment. You, on the other hand, were SO worried about the possibility that right wing extremist haters might not be treated as harmless that you were practically spitting with rage over the department's attempts to warn government officials and the public about their danger.

I wonder if you'll have the decency to take any of that back.

Sadly, I think I know the answer . . .

4. Maybe I'm Naive
But it seems to me that left wing people, raising my hand here, do not hate. And it seems to be that is the motivation of most right wingers--they hate everything they don't believe in. I find that we're more pro-whatever than anti-whatever. But, as I said, maybe I'm just naive.

11. I am not sure if there are not haters on the left
however; it is highly unusual to see a leftie threaten someones life or murder someone because of differing opinnions.

That is all on the neo-right terrorist, they hide behind their free speech and their bibles to enforce and justify their crimes.

15. There are haters on the left
At one time in this country there were far left groups intent on killing people. There are enviornmental groups intent on the same thing. They are both disgusting.

13. No Republican will denounce these groups or take back their rants against DHS
Meanwhile, the vast stew of crazy and stupid that is the Internet will continue to feed these monsters. Instead of growing smaller or less powerful, they will grow stronger, more crazy and more dangerous.

Obama being in the White House has driven more people crazy than a bomb full of bad weed dropped into Times Square. You can see it everywhere, from all directions. This foolishness is just getting started.

14. I tuned in to the first 20 minutes today
to see if Morning Joe would be as silent on this shooting as Dr TIller....yup. Mentioned in the "news" read, but no one commented on it at all. Instead, they launched into a discussion about how David Letterman would never make a joke about a Democratic politician's kid. First of all, I do think that Letterman would joke about a Democratic politician's kid if she had a baby at 18. I do understand the point about not joking about kids, but come on. Plus, I really doubt that no comedians ever made fun of Chelsea when she was that young (I mean, besides John McCain). I sure hope they eventually got to a broader discussion about the shooting, but I doubt it.

16. If the Obama's had paraded a pregnant 17-year-old daughter across stage after stage
with Baby Daddy in tow and then engaged in a pub lic feud with Baby Daddy while the daughter posed for the cover of People Magazine, you can BET Letterman would have joked about it.

And so would Scarborough and every other rightwing blowhard.
