1. Jackeens I love your posts but what is an "ultra-orthodox Jew?" picture 6.
Do you mean Hasidic? Or is there another group. Love the pics though.

5. Because I thought vaberella found the description offensive
Edited on Thu Jun-04-09 08:24 AM by Jackeens
I genuinely don't know, but in your Wiki definition it says it's "a term never used by those involved" - so I thought it best to change it.

6. No I wasn't offended...it was actually an honest question.
I know there are different types of Jews and I didn't know if there were other types of "ultra-orthodox Jew"----actually I don't like the "ultra," that struck me---orthodox is fine; but I wasn't sure if there were other orthodox Jews.

7. (shrug) I didn't detect a connotation of offensiveness of the term in the wiki article...
Edited on Thu Jun-04-09 08:26 AM by BlooInBloo
But it's your post.

EDIT: Now those superduper double-dog orthodox Jews, yah, you might want to rephrase that one. :P

11. Okay, mass confusion here!
Sorry everyone! I just copied the daylife.com caption, I didn't stop to think that the 'ultra' bit might be offensive - and let's be honest, 'ultra' is a pretty extreme word! Again, reading that Wiki definition - ie it's a term never used by Haredi or Chareidi Jews themselves - I thought it best to change it.

3. ...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haredi_Judaism

Haredi or Chareidi<1> Judaism is the most theologically conservative form of Orthodox Judaism. A follower of Haredi Judaism is called a Haredi (Haredim in the plural). In non-Jewish circles, it is sometimes referred to as Ultra-Orthodox Judaism,<2><3><4> a term never used by those involved, who use the word Ḥaredi or other expressions instead.

So they were Haredi and not Hasidic? Thanks. I wasn't sure if there were other types of Orthodox Jews.

Around NYC, it's mainly Hasidic Jews or their really the ones I'm aware of.
I've mainly seen the ones with the curls on the side of their hair.

17. i think there are a few sects that would be considered ultra orthodox.
i live in a neighborhood that is heavily jewish, although i am not. there are a lot of the hasidim here. but there are also a lot of lubovichers, who i think could also be considered pretty orthodox. they do not practice birth control, and mostly avoid doctors. lots of big families. i had 4 home births, and a lot of them used the same docs. they also stick to the kosher laws, and all that.
hope that does not seem like a crass definition. i do not know the ins and outs.
i think there are a couple of other sects, but i am not sure.

18. They have names...."ultra" is not the name.
Hence my problem. I don't care how some people describe them or how they are described, but they have a proper name and that's what I took issue with. I could even take Orthodox Jew because there are Orthodox or Traditionalist Catholics. However, each group has a proper name...and as such I wanted to know if there were other groups that were orthodox since I know of Hasidic Jews.

16. Wow!!!.. their lives stop to listen to our president, while
ours in the west continues like if he is a nobody. This is one of the reasons why our country is targeted by the international community as egocentric and self-centered. We don't care about what happens beyond our shores. Meanwhile the international community is so well informed as to what happens within our shores. it's amazing!!

27. I think what is outstanding about this
is that they have stopped their lives for a few moments to listen to our American president. I don't recall that ever happening with Bush.

And to be fair, we see Obama on TV every day, practically. It is not rare here. There would be something wrong if we were being treated to a special rare appearance, don't you think?

25. Great post--thank you
I got a little verklempt looking at these pictures, because I can't help but feel that Obama inspires something in the people of these nations that they haven't had a lot of lately--hope. They see, I think, that he is serious about changing the course of history, and that things may get better. That's *our* President, and I'm so proud of him.

Interesting how most of Egypt shut down to listen to President Obama's speech.

Also, when I learned that Cairo University has around 200,000 students, my jaw was agape! I believe it's also one of the world's oldest universities, originally dating back some 1100 years old or so. Although in it's current form, it's about 100 years old.
