US harboring war criminals
Thank you for your attention. (yeah, cheap trick)

1.)
The former US-government faced a sudden extreme threat to national security. They decided to react with whatever they deemed necessary. If that means breaking the law... Well, mince a few words, hire some good attorneys and you can bend the law.

And while you are bending the law, why not use this opportunity to further your private goals.

2.)
The Geneva Conventions were ignored.
The Bush-government knew it.

Basic human rights were trampled on. Degradation. Torture. Rape.
MAYBE the government knew it. MAYBE they ignored it.
BUT: They are the ones who declared, that all this is legal.

I'm not sure: Is providing a legal cover-up for war crimes a war crime itself?

What if Pol Pot had had a legal opinion by his lawyers that the torture and genocide of the Red Khmer were within the rule of law?
What if the Taliban had a legal opinion, that Al-Qaeda's 9/11-attack was a preemptive defense against US-american aggression in the Middle-East?
Surely, Saddam Hussein's actions were perfectly legal: executing enemies of the state, torturing them to discourage others, waging war against the Kuwaitis who owed him money...
What about Hitler? According to his laws and legal opinions, war, genocide and terror were perfectly fine.
And last, but not least, what about Stalin's Russia, Iran, Syria, Zimbabwe, Myanmar, North Korea, China, Cuba?

3.)
And today? Obama has all but openly stated, that he won't prosecute members of the Bush administration for war crimes. Evidence and witnesses are everywhere.
Why would he hesitate? Is he waiting for a complete Supreme Court? Is he waiting for the economic trouble to calm down, so he has some breathing space? Is he gambling on a further disintegration of the republican party?

In the meantime, Obama's US of A, the beacon of freedom in the world, the shining city on a hill, a hopeful new beginning, is harboring war criminals.

The US are lucky, that there is currently trouble in the world and everybody needs each other. Want an example of what I mean?
The EU issued a clear demand to Serbia: You will in no way join the EU until all people accused of war crimes are transferred to the ICC.
And the US? Certainly you can't demand any concessions from them!

4.)
Imagine what would happen, if nothing would happen. No investigations, no prosecutions, or merely ones that don't go deep enough.

MYANMAR TORTURED PEOPLE AND DETAINED THEM ILLEGALLY!
Oh, shut the f**k up. So did you.

CHINA IGNORES HUMAN RIGHTS!
Oh, shut the f**k up. So did you.

RUSSIA WAGED AN ILLEGAL WAR AGAINST GEORGIA TO GAIN INFLUENCE IN THE REGION!
Oh, shut the f**k up. So did you in Iraq.

How can you demand morals, if you don't have morals?

1. Not the first time
Just saw a lovely student film called Operation Paper Clip.

It appears our Defense Department brought over 1600 Nazi Scientist. Some who worked in death camps and participated in experiments on concentration camp victims.
