Tancredo on Sotomayor, "A brown woman..."
Edited on Sat May-30-09 12:46 PM by vaberella
Now...I didn't get to see this vid and MSNBC conveniently kept this part of out of their questioning...but how can he be taken seriously after this comment. What I found interesting is that much the way "Black Bitch" is used to emphasize the race of the woman and as a double insult (ie Blackness is as bad as bitch)...Tancredo played the same game with Sotomayor by emphasizing "brown". This is the first time I've seen this used for Latina women, and I'm sure it won't be the last. When I saw that...all I could think was, "welcome to the club..."

The GOP has taken race way too far and Tancredo (who is of Italian descent, like I thought he was) is a mad man with loose lips and I have the feeling more and more of this shit is going to be coming out. I would love to see Tancredo and Pat Buchanan on screen together because I know they'd let loose a slew of racist epitaphs on screen. At that point, I hope he gets fired---Pat that is.

Edit to include vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSliLDRJqy8

Black bitches and Brown women are running amok.

5. That's WONDERFUL!
Get it ALL on video--every last word, from every complaining racist! You can't unring those pixels!

Tancredo should have listened to his parents and grandparents better; they'd probably have been able to tell him stories of pretty bitter hatred and discrimination towards people of his ethnicity. It just might curl his combed over, poorly dyed hair....

But because she's a Latina, she's automaticallyt "brown." Uh huh. Racist much, GOP?

Edited on Sat May-30-09 02:28 PM by vaberella
To them there is only Black and White---skin tone means nothing. So Latina's are looked upon by bigots as sort of a man-made race---black and white mixed to get Brown. It's absolutely ridiculous, but this seems to be the reasoning I've heard.

30. I've wondered about that
I noticed a while back that any given basketball team is likely to comprise a spectrum of five different skin tones -- only one of which would conventionally be described as white.

Given that white Europeans are mostly descended from a very small group of people who managed to beat their way across the tundra to Europe during the Ice Age -- and who were probably kind of Polynesian-looking to begin with, until a combination of low sunlight and genetic drift turned them into today's bleached-out populations -- it does seem bizarre to want to lump the rich diversity of the rest of the world into a single category.

But then, I learned back when I studied linguistics in the college that humans don't categorize things as "A or B" but as "A or non-A." And when it comes to social categorizations, "A" is typically the dominant group and "non-A" is everybody else. "A" is men and "non-A" is women, children, gays, old people, and intelligent parrots. "A" is whites and "non-A" is black/brown/beige/bronze/golden/whatever. You can tell a lot about the power relationships from the way the words work.

34. Yup. I learned that as well. Antrhopology though, linguistics was mandatory.
The most interesting aspect of this is if you get a chance to read up on Christopher Columbus and the usage of names in order to show ownership and dominance. It was interesting in that regard as well. There's always the dynamic of Us versus the Other.

I don't want to say O is playing Chess. But he is making moves that he must have an idea would be blown into. It's like he was wanting this to happen and what's great is that Sotomayor is superbly qualified and one of, if not most qualified for the position.

16. Tancredo has an axe to grind against the GOP, who he feels marginalized him during his 2008 prez run
Gingrich is prepping the base for a 2012 presidential run while Rush wants to max out his audience numbers because that's what his pricy gig at Clear Channel is all about. None of them really give a shit about 2010 midterms. It's a fugly intra-party war and it's crippling the Republican chances of ever getting out of the minority, which must give Pres. Obama a delightful chuckle with Michelle on their date nights.

It's their job. They're trained to be clam at all times and to smile at the end of an interview, no matter what. From a personal standpoint, they probably also enjoy having a front seat to the GOP party's freakshow implosion. :D

"Brown woman", being created as a term by a guy who built his "legacy" on keeping (non-Italian) immigrants out, is just a giant, pounding, red thumb of a self-inflicted wound on the GOP.

23. I already explained in my statement. It's to compare the usage.
This was the first time I've ever seen the colour factor used as an insult towards Latino/Latinas. A common one when a racist throws an insult they like making the race even more of insult. As in Black bitch...as in to stress that bitch is not enough of an insult. The race is also an insult or an epitaph to stress their hate. In this case, Tancredo stressed Brown woman in order to direct his criticism. ie..."That Brown woman...." or "A brown woman..." as though her skin colour gives way to all the negative stereotypes about her and it's a direction of insults.

Hence the reason I brought in "Black bitch," this is the first time I've ever seen it used towards people of Latin descent and I've heard many.

21. Oh this was in discussion in another thread.
People wanted to know the origin of the name Tancredo because they didn't see the name as a "white" name as in he had some sort of immigrant background. Yet, he's spouting these rather racially charged statements. Some thought his name was of Latino origins, and I thought it was Italian.

"Tancredo was born in Denver, Colorado to Adeline Lombardi and Gerald Tancredo. Both sets of his grandparents emigrated from Italy."

Fun facts..

"A former Roman Catholic, Tancredo is now a member of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church.<11> Tancredo is married to Jackie Tancredo. They met at Drake Junior High School as teachers, and married in 1977.<12> They have two children and five grandchildren.

On February 3, 2009 the Denver Post revealed that Tancredo has probably lost a significant amount of money invested in hedge funds with Agile Group<13>, a Boulder-based investment company with substantial investments in Bernie Madoff's investment firm."

47. I'm not kidding. He quit his House seat but has said he'd be interested in running
People were speculating that he might run against Salazar, which would have been an interesting time. But now Salazar's not running, and the Dems have a much softer candidate in Bennett. However, the Repub. big names seem to be lining up for the race for Gov. wherein Governor Ritter has had an extremely lackluster record over the past 6 years and hasn't displayed much political savvy. That has the potential to be a real humdinger.

Tancredo for Senate was, and is, a quixotic joke, but I hope he tries just for laughs and so that maybe we'll see him depart from the scene once and for all.
