2 Pittsburgh Diner Ladies Making Pancakes at WH for Obamas & 80 Vets
Edited on Mon May-25-09 12:53 AM by RamboLiberal
-----

Ms. Cohen and Ms. Klingensmith, owners of six Pamela's P&G Diners, are working feverishly this morning inside the White House kitchen to prepare their thin, plate-sized, crispy-edged pancakes for President Barack Obama, first lady Michelle Obama and 80 military veterans for a Memorial Day extravaganza.

-----

At 10 a.m. Wednesday, Ms. Klingensmith, 54, was driving through Bloomfield when the White House reached her on her cell phone. She said she suspected problems when the caller identification was blocked. At first she thought the White House request was a joke. Finally convinced it was for real, she pulled into a gas station. That's when the hyperventilating began.

And it worsened when the White House called back several times with details, updates and travel plans. Ms. Klingensmith called Ms. Cohen, 54, in their Strip District diner. She, too, thought it was one big joke.

------

(Candidate Obama stopped at their diner in April, 2008)

When the future president left the diner that busy morning, he said, "We'll be back for them" -- them, of course, referring to their thin, crispy pancakes.

And, for sure, he thought enough of those pancakes and the diner's lyonnaise-style home fries that he chose Ms. Cohen and Ms. Klingensmith to cook breakfast for his first Memorial Day in the White House.

Then-Sen. Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, shared a breakfast of pancakes at Pamela's Diner in the Strip District in April with co-owner Gail Klingensmith, left.

5. Eating pancakes with 80 vets and his family in the WH on Memorial Day.
He really must hate America.

I wonder what the GOPers will twist this into...

I know what I'm making for lunch...I think we even have some bacon, great with pancakes.....

8. NOTE: I have seen absolutely NO reference to this on MSM this morning.
Edited on Mon May-25-09 08:05 AM by old mark
Even Googled it and found maybe 2 references to it....
Have we got a little media prejudice here?
Or did I just miss the coverage?

9. The pancake piece is a local story, really--Here's some video from Pittsburgh.
http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/allegheny/19549151/detail.html

Video to the right of the print story. Includes interview with the owners of the place.

This matters more to people from Pennsylvania than anywhere else.

The fact that Obama is having breakfast with gold star families of deceased veterans is the "national" story--who makes that breakfast is less important in the bigger scheme of things.

The fact that he's breakfasting with the families has been covered, extensively.

Also, since Obama is biracial, the "focus" is on the traditional wreath to the Confederate dead that the White House sends over for that monument. That's the Big Whoop of the moment. He's apparently also sending a wreath to the African American Civil War soldier's monument, to diffuse the manufactured controversy.

14. i get what you're saying about the media
and its penchant for manufactured controversy, especially anything that has the added angle of obama's race, but personally i'm not sure how keen i am on the idea of any president honoring those who fought not only to keep african americans enslaved, but died fighting to destroy the union (same goes for all the confederate generals that get honored all the time). and if this is indeed the first time that any president has thought to honor african american soldiers who died in the civil war with a wreath, then that's probably what i find the most upsetting; that's something that's long overdue, and ought to have nothing to do with "making up for" honoring the confederates.
perhaps the media is covering all this in their usual crappy way, but something isn't inherently a non-issue just because they are being less than thoughtful in how they talk about it.

but anyway about the pancakes, congrats to these women. i'm guess their story isn't deemed worthy of the national coverage that all kinds of pointless stories get, because it can't be spun into a controversy like they did with the st. louis pizza @ the white house story a few months ago.

18. EE: I understand what you mean about the slavery issue, but my
family had members on both sides of the CIvil war, as did many other families, also if it was to be dont, I'd rather an African American President do it than, say, Bush....

20. Well, he split the diff. I suspect his attitude towards the whole thing
might have been similar to mine. These dead soldiers are dead, no matter what side they fought on. Their families loved them, and their descendants honor them---for whatever reason. Elections have consequences, and so do wars. The Union won that one, hands down. No need to rub it in and deny them the Memorial Day nod they've been getting for eons, now.

The reason the AA soldiers weren't "honored" is because they were never "dishonored" (though the media might want us to draw that conclusion)--the reason for placing the wreath at that particular monument is to "balance" the Confederate wreath business in the context of Obama being biracial and, quite obviously, sensitive to issues involving his heritage. If the White House placed wreaths at every war monument in the greater DC area, they'd be busy as all get out!

Now, like it or not, the Confederate thing is has fallen into the old "custom and tradition" realm for US Presidents--no doubt it was seen, when it was first started, as a "healing" or "unifying" gesture. Obama COULD say "Well, Fuck Tradition" but he's interested in getting reelected, smart feller that he is. So, he started a NEW tradition, instead. One step ahead!

The "pancakes" story might take off yet--probably not as a Memorial Day story, but who knows? Maybe Martha Stewart will have them on to give their recipe and chat...or maybe some other show with a cooking segment will "do" them.

I've noticed that unless it's breaking news with a truncated shelf life, that human interest stuff takes three days to migrate from print to tee vee. Dunno why. Everyone thinks I'm terribly well informed because I am aware of stories well before they hit the tee vee, but that's because I don't bother with tee vee news much....

21. yeah it's one of those things that's become tradition
and i hardly expect that to change now, but i'm curious to find out more about when and how it became tradition for the president to honor the confederate soldiers' monument.
as for honoring AA soldiers, the notion that AA soldiers who fought in the civil war haven't previously been "dishonored," that's pretty ridiculous; as dismissive as the majority population likes to be about it, there has in fact been a long history of denying the contributions of AAs to the military in this country, and especially as it regards to their role in the civil war. and no, given that the civil war was in large part fought over the role of AAs in this country, honoring their monument is not just another on the list of thousands of war monuments in DC to honor; and it shouldn't have taken a black president trying to "split the difference" to do it.

How about this? Plate sized, thin pancakes with crispy edges ARE NOT PANCAKES!!!! They are CREPES.

This Kenyan, Muslim communist is celebrating a holiday meant to honor our war dead by eating FRENCH FOOD!!!!!!!!!!!

Does that satisfy your predictions (if not, I can go on by how they are closer to blintzes then pancakes or even crepes).

do on Memorial Day for the VETS.

I'm sure the corporate media is just full of this news?

If not then we have to get it out.
