Appeasing Dick Cheney is what will inflame anti-american hatred
The world watched the Bush administration trample all over our constitution and brazenly advocate the torture of our enemies and perceived enemies. It destroyed our reputation in the world. And now Dick Cheney has been hitting all the shows still brazenly advocating torture and still spreading fear. One of the most discredited people in American history said that the detainee abuse photos being released was a danger to national security. Then the Obama administration decides not to release them.

The photos are bad, sure, but the men responsible for those abuses at the highest levels of the U.S. government are the ones who have to worry about any repercussions from them. Men like Dick Cheney. And now the world sees that he's being protected and the U.S. is again turning a blind eye to torture. That doesn't make people like us by a long shot. Just the opposite.

Now for the most part, I don't really care who likes us or not. I think we need to play well with the rest of the world, sure, but some people will like us and others won't that's how it works. But if the official excuse is that we don't want to inflame hatred by releasing those pictures, well it's a weak one and does no good to improve our reputation in the world at all.

2. Can you see how... to the world...
It might appear that the wolves are still in charge of the hen house?

I won't look at them, but I want them released. We need to own up to this and fix it once and for all. Allowing BushCo to skate on yet another issue is really going to piss the world off.

3. will there be public protests over this decision?
as I recall, there were protests all over the world, some violence even, when the Abu Ghraib photos were first released.

8. I think not releasing the photos puts Cheney in a horrible light
Photos too bad to release? The imagination tends to be much worse than reality.

On the contrary, releasing the photos may dampen the outrage (especially if people aren't being severely mutilated). People may look at the much hyped photos and think to themselves: That's it? I don't think the general public reacted with much outrage over the Abu Ghraib photos.

No... I feel it's much better if we let everyone wonder what is in the photos while also giving the commanders the benefit of the doubt.
