Al Franken is expected to file his reply this afternoon to the brief Norm Coleman submitted to the state Supreme Court in the latest chapter of Minnesota's U.S. Senate race ... Coleman has appealed last month's election-trial ruling to the Minnesota Supreme Court. His camp argues that the three-judge panel applied a stricter standard for counting thousands of disputed absentee ballots than was used on Election Day. As a result, Coleman says, two constitutional principles were violated: equal protection, because similar ballots were counted differently, and due process, because the court imposed different rules to count the ballots after the election was over ... Today is the deadline for the Franken side to file its brief. St. Paul, Minn. — Democrat Al Franken's attorneys called on the Minnesota Supreme Court today to uphold a ruling that declared Franken the winner of Minnesota's long-running U.S. Senate race.

Franken's lawyers filed their paperwork in response to Republican Norm Coleman's appeal.

Coleman has asked the court to order the three-judge panel that heard his election contest to count more rejected votes or say no one won the race. The MN Supremes hinted that once they ruled, they would issue the writ of mandamus, requiring Pawlenty to issue the certificate of election.
