Edited on Thu May-07-09 04:48 PM by TheCoxwain
congress and senate 'pretending' to represent us..

They wont even have an advocate for single payer ( Heaven forbid someone makes a rational case for it) - though it is an option that majority of us would vote for in a heart beat...

These Bastards come puckering up to our asses for our votes and thumb their noses once they have it ...

I am frustrated.

2. You'd have to take the fleas with the dogs
National Referenda?

Gay marriage would be voted away in no time flat.

3. Ballot initiatives are a horrible idea
Edited on Thu May-07-09 04:55 PM by Richardo
I'm from California so I know firsthand.

There's such a thing as too much direct democracy. Especially in a country where political media content is purely market-driven.

6. Agreed, ballot initatives are usually about stupid/dangerous things
Letting the voters decide stuff through ballot initiatives is downright dangerous. If we did that for every tax and spend issue then voters would vote to have no one pay any taxes, and vote for lots of spending. Obviously you can't spend lots and not pay for it and expect to be able to keep this up for very long.

The ballot initiatives on stuff like civil rights tend to even worse, especially when it's about taking away rights from hated minority groups.

Worse yet, by simply changing the wording of something you can make a horrible idea sound much more appealing to idiots who just read half the question and don't think about it before voting on it.

4. Because the founding fathers did not trust us...
Edited on Thu May-07-09 05:15 PM by kirby
The founding fathers felt the populace was not smart enough and/or would not make decisions in the best interest of the nation.

Not to mention that we are a Republic and not a Democracy.

5. I like England's Parliamentary government idea much better than ours.
The Prime Minister and the other leaders can be ousted if the people get fed up enough.

8. Isn't it Parliament that decides when to hold an election?
They cannot go longer than five years between elections, but they can call them sooner of Parliament ends up in a quagmire.

10. Not perfect
A parlimentary government is not perfect, since the executive is also a member of parliment there is a unitary executive.

9. I understand your frustration.
'FRAMING' has so much to do with this stuff. Instead of calling it 'single payer,' which is probably only understood by the cognoscenti (!!!! :eyes: ) if it were referred to as something like 'universal medicare,' wouldn't it be better understood? And then, wouldn't the decider-types have to do some work explaining what they think about it???

12. I am sick and tired too of our elected representatives turning their backs on the mandates of
the people like single-payer health insurance. It's clear the government is broken when you can neither get a seat at the table or have a voice in the discussion for single-payer health care - the plan preferred by most Americans.

I am really steamed about it and I am not all prepared to back down.
