When the time comes, I hope Obama doesn't make the George HW Bush mistake with the SCOTUS
George H.W. Bush's "mis-under-estimation" of Justice David Souter turned out to be a blessing in disguise for the left, but I hope Obama doesn't repay the favor...

I hope Obama gets to make 2 appointments in his first term, & I hope he picks people LEFT, not moderate, but LEFT of center....Bush 43 made no apologies for Roberts & Ailito, & had McCain won, you know damn well he'd have tried to go Robert Bork right on his nominations...

Screw the GOP, fuck the Blue Dogs, it's time for liberal appointments to the SCOTUS...

2. It will also depend on the makeup of the Senate. If we lose seats in the upcoming election.

It will be more difficult.

All the more reason to do our job in 2010 to elect Democratic Senators and increase the numbers. And other local, state and federal offices.

Obama supporters that only came out to work for Obama need to come out in 2010 for Democratic candidates from Senators all the way down to city council members that support Obama's agenda. We lost races like the Governor here in Indiana because their only concern was electing Obama.

Maybe one action that Obama supporters could do would be to get involved in the endorsement process of candidates. There would be three ways of endorsements they could utilize. One would be provide input to any organization they are a member to the committee. Second, they could request a chance to speak before various PAC committees on their preferred candidate. Third, they could as individuals or small groups of individuals via newspapers and events.

On edit... and replace Blue Dogs and such with Obama supporters when possible.

4. This is another reason why we need to get Al Franken seated
that would be awful if Obama nominates someone & Republicans are able to use the filibuster....

We. need. to. get. Franken. in. the. senate. yesterday.

7. Depends on what the meaning of "we" is.

Democrats will certainly have 59. But Conservatives will still have a slight majority given that half a dozen or more Senate Democrats are Conservatives vs the one or two moderate Republicans.

Would Evan Bayh vote to approve a pro-choice Supreme?

8. Bayh would probably weasel out and make an excuse.
Which is why 2010 we need to elect more Obama Democratic Senators.

3. Poppy Bush had to go for Souter because Bork was rejected
Edited on Mon Apr-20-09 09:05 AM by Jennicut
thanks in part to our current VP.
I don't see anyone smart enough on the Repub side to take on a liberal on legal issues alone like Biden did with Bork (the right to privacy.)
Obama should be able to get who he wants through the confirmation process. And its true that Bush pushed through Alito and Roberts. Of course, we could have had Harriet Myers. I wonder if she was all that conservative. She certainly was not that intelligent!
