Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan (D) announced Wednesday that she raised just more than $1 million in the first quarter, nearly doubling her top GOP competitor.
Rep. Roy Blunt (R) pulled in a relatively pedestrian $550,000, though he was able to transfer another $340,000 from his House account.
Blunt’s total will come as encouragement for former state Treasurer Sarah Steelman, who is leaning toward challenging him in a primary. Steelman will not file a financial report because she is not officially in the race yet.
Much of Blunt’s appeal to national party operatives was his fundraising prowess as a former member of House leadership.
Carnahan said she received $1,048,000 from more than 1,400 contributors in the 60 days between announcing her candidacy and March 31, the end of the filing period.
“In these tough economic times, when so many families are reeling from the failed policies of the Bush years, I couldn't be more grateful for this outpouring of early support from so many friends,” Carnahan said in an e-mail to supporters.
