Obama giving another stellar speech to the Turkey Parliament
Edited on Mon Apr-06-09 08:01 AM by nomaco-10
I think it's one of his better overseas speeches, and possibly one of his most important in this European tour.

CNN is airing it in it's entirety, MSNBC left a while ago and FUX chose not to air it at all. Hope some of you are watching.

1. That he is ....
... shall we email Ed and complain about his new network cutting away from the President to interview HIM? Not Ed's fault, but at least he'd be more apt to listen.

3. Just advocated Palestinian statehood!
Saying that BOTH parties (Israel and their supporters and the Palestinians and their supporters) had already agreed to it.

5. While I'm no expert in what a typical visiting head of state speech sounds like...
... I DID watch PM Brown's speech before the US Congress and it's amazing the difference in tone between his speech and Barack's speech.

Mr. Brown spend most of his time lauding the US and promising the UK's support. (which was wonderful)

Our President is telling the Turkish Parliament .... in a friendly tone .... what the two nations will do together and how US plans to set the stage of how to make the world better hoping Turkey will join us.

I realize this has has more to do with the US being a superpower but still ....

"and I know because *I* am one of them!"

To which the Parliamnt applauded. The first applause I've noticed so far.

8. Saying that it hadn't been that many years ago that it ...
would not have been possible for a person that "looked like him" to become POTUS, and making reference to our history of slavery and the treatment of Native Americans when comparing the Turkish history with the Armenians and Kurds, and how it's possible to move forward and implement change and unity.

I like that he addresses our own failures in history as a case in point, and uses it to show that change and progress are possible for all countries, instead of using accusatory and hypocritical language.
