And since you're obviously interested, my personal answer is Option 7. People who use the :eyes: more than twice a day should be banned. That just really grates my cheddar. :)

75. Why do people who find polls distasteful click into a thread with "Poll" in the damn title??
Does that make sense to anyone on this board?? Anyone????

99. personaly,
i find people who click on other people's polls distasteful but only after they click on said person's poll and then gripe about the other person's poll after the clicking has occured.

Sincerely,

118. Why do you keep coming in here??
Rapier-like wit? I wasn't being funny. I was truly trying to understand why someone who dislikes polls not only clicks on a thread with "Poll" big as damn day in the title, but spends enough time in the poll that they allegedly despise long enough to read and respond to comments.

You obviously don't have an answer and yet you still keep coming in here. Nothing has changed. It's STILL a poll. So, why don't you do yourself a favor and go find somebody else's thread to go look like a fool in?

120. I guess I like you. Really. I really really like you.
And wit is not always funny. It began as a purely academic exercise, humor was not the point. And you are right - you aren't funny.

Wuss. Maybe I don't like you quite so much. But maybe I do.

123. I was reading down to post my "other" choice
And here it is. I hate it that a substantial number of people come here to start shit with others. Debate is one thing, but some here are so damn quick to snap at another. If you're in a bad mood it's not okay to take it out on other people, internet, phone or in person.

We could spend all day trying to figure out why it seems like some people here don't have a good day until they're pissing off the world, but it's really not interesting or important enough to bother with...

13. The fairly widespread the-hell-with-Obama,....
the-hell-with-Democrats, they're-just-a-bunch-of-corporate-sell-outs sentiment. As though we didn't get a nasty lesson in the fruits of that kind of thinking in a big way, as recently as 2000, with the Gore - Nader fracas, and reap a shamelessly plutocratic and warmongering administration partly as a result. And, we could have had McCain in the White House to launch a ruinous war of aggression against Iran, had similar voices prevailed in 2008. Pressuring Democrats to go far enough is one thing, allowing Republicans to win, another.

168. I personally think that the real moderates are not getting enough say
Right wing Republican voting Democrats (Bayh etc) are hitting programmes that Obama was clearly elected to deliver on. The weakest of AMerica do not have lobbyists, they do not have the ears of Senators or Representatives, they do not even have the ears of City Council Members. Yet Republican voting Democratic Senators have watered down make work pay, cut back on welfare programmes included in the recovery package, will probably weaken universal health care and do not recognise that it is these programmes Republicans want to fail as if they fail to get delivered the Democrats lose.

Bingo.

And unless you are an integral part of the DU community (i.e. post here 24/7 all the time) you really aren't going to find them particularly funny, cleverly satirical or anything . That sounds harsh but you really have to lead a fairly sheltered life to find some of it as cutting or insightful as people here seem to.

I can think of one poster who writes satire I guess, where it is pretty much the same thing every single time but it always gets 5 recs in a minute. I mean it isn't that it is bad stuff. It is just kinda..I don't know blah, self-plagiarizing/repetitive. What is worse about this poster is they appear to poach other people's funny or clever posts (seen that happen just today) and post them as their own. And of course it got 20 recs in about 15s.

1. Not quite the choice about the meaty threads, but close. People get all hung up on stupid little stuff and also rush to judgement.

2. They have a liberal litmus test and when a politician fails on any point, they get flamed big time with little or no consideration for circumstance or nuance.

38. When I started, a few folks tried to get all "tough guy" on me because I didn't have 6000 posts
But they were by FAR in the minority. I think it's because it's obvious I'm not a Republican so I never said anything that could even be mildly construed as Repub-esque. I am not a Democrat either, I'm a Dem-leaning indie, so I think my lack of fanatical fervor made some folks question me when I first started. Shoot, some may still question me now, but who gives a sh*t??

My complaint when I first got here was that there was a very small few here who just discounted the opinions of newbies, which I think is unfair. However, if folks are thinking you're a Republican, well, I'm not quite sure what to say about that...

It was definitely in GD : P, I suggested the now President needed to inject a bit more passion in to his speeches/interviews. Seriously. It is against the rules to call out someone as a new person and point out low posts. It's also against the rules to call someone a Republican.

42. I'm sorry to hear about that. Alot of stuff about the Groups section is weird
My favorite is the African American Interest Group. One of my favorite places on this whole damn site, just wish it had greater participation. *cough** *blackfolkspleasepostthere* **cough** http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topics&forum=258 :)

But you can't rec any of the stuff in the groups! Some of the stuff posted in the Groups is great, but I guess the fear is that the Greatest Page would be littered with people's pet issues and interests. It's a shame because people really kind of let their hair down in the Groups and alot of the stuff there is worth reading.

ideas whatsoever - just either trashing the poster or killing the messenger. Made me not even want to post anything anymore. If you look at other sites like this - people do not do that. there is an idea and people intellegently debate it. No like here - idea, three word trash, three word trash.

133. Yes ! Putting my tinfoil hat on, during the elections, I SWEAR
there were a dozen people who would instantly respond with negativity. It was like they had a device that went "ding, ding, ding" whenever a post came up. Typically, it was whenever someone said anything remotely negative about the Obama campaign. You couldn't even discuss the pros and cons of anything without getting slammed. Like a censorship - so overwhelmingly belittled you gave up trying to discuss things intelligently from all angles. I like to think there wasn't an orchestrate effort going on -- but it was just too prevalent and too instantaneously for there not to have been.

I haven't spent much time here lately - but I bet the same thing is happening now. My thought -- free speech ! And it's good to question and debate things. It doesn't mean you don't think he's the greatest president we've known.

I've often found that people who are drawn to cliques are usually the most intellectually challenged, insecure people around. And the cliques on DU, and Lord knows there are a few, certainly help bolster that perception.

If I do happen to read one that hasn't specifically asked for a K & R in the title but does in the body, I purposely will not rec.

The way I see it, threads that truly deserve to be K & R'd don't have to ASK for it. They're just good enough all on their own.

I was the nerdy but cute as hell girl that only got hit on by the boys when their friends weren't looking floating blissfully through high school on an intoxicating (but highly confusing to my mother) cloud of Public Enemy, Greek mythology and Harlequin Teen Romance novels.

I listened to NWA by day and drifted off to sleep reading my Time Life "Mysteries of the Unknown" book collection. At our graduation, the star of our basketball team gave me a kiss and grabbed my butt. Said he'd been wanting to for ages...

If you say something good about Obama you love him and are a moronic cheerleader. If you say something negative about Obama you're a hater and a freeper. And we do that with everyone. The Krugman/Obama stuff is a crystal clear example of what I'm talking about, and it's far from the only one.

on every issue on du.

its fine to have issues you totally and completely agree with obama on, and its totally fine to have issues you dont agree with...

i dont see the big deal with having those stances,

but the reality of it is , people on du have to big of egos to rationally or calmly discuss things...

people hafta puff out their chests or check on their penis sizes....as if they have something to prove on an internet discussion board.

im sure ive been guilty of it too at times.

you cant let yourselves get so darn upset and angry about things on this forum. its a forum.

its easy to act that way, when put in a non-face to face interaction.

kinda funny that some who are probably the most passive and/or non-aggressive in actuality in every day iife, are probably some of the most aggressive and vicious when put into the realm of the internet...

thats what makes the internet so interesting...the ability to re-create with little effort.

91. Absolutely... but it isn't most posters
There really aren't that many posters like that, and if you get rid of the ones that are with the ignore function most of that shit goes away. Lately there's been a lot more like that since the primaries, but it isn't the majority of posters. If that binary thinking crowd is your biggest issue with DU you can get rid of most of it and make it a much better place for yourself.

There are so many options here that allow people to tailor their own experience, but instead it seems that most people don't use those functions or use them enough and opt instead to perpetuate what they dislike the most by engaging with people that bug them, clicking on threads with idiot titles, not alerting on problem posters, etc.

However, I do see a difference now in how this place is moderated. Much more general meanness and personal attacks are here than it used to be. I don't know if that's because people don't bother to alert anymore or if it's moderators slacking off, or what. In any other forum I've ever been to (some of them quite heated) that sort of thing wasn't allowed. Either threads that got out of hand were closed and/or problem posters got banned. I see many people here that are still allowed to stay even though most of what they post is obnoxious. I think far too much emphasis is put on posters that have been here a long time and racked up mega amounts of posts in whether or not they get booted... there are quite a few people who are frequent long time posters that don't get booted when they're more disruptive and obnoxious than newer posters that do get booted. Again, I don't know if that's because it's the newer posters that tend to be alerted on or what.

Just to prove my point, it won't be 5 minutes after I post this that someone will post "you mean YOU are childish". Happens every time and the poster won't care that it makes my point in spades (or will do it just for fun as will happen now that I've mentioned this.)

I think the biggest problem is one that members of each of the categories you define above exhibit all too often. A simple, basic, lack of manners. Yeah I know all of the reasons for it: the anonymity of the internet and so on, but the fact remains that it takes but one dedicated asshole to turn a whole forum on it's head. When you have 30, 50, or 100 people snarling and putting each other down at the merest hint of a disagreement, real or imagined, you get what DU General and GD:P look like right now, and have since about January 2008 more or less.

There are people like this in every category or clique here you could care to name. Centrists, Liberals, prior members of the Obama and Clinton camps (and a few holdovers from the Edwards or Kucinich camps among others), gun-grabbers, gun toters, conspiracy theorists and so called "reality-based" posters, newbs, old-timers, climate change activists, deniers of climate change, capitalists, socialists, Chavez supporters, Chavez haters, and so on. I could do this all day, unlike the Sham-wow guy.

It's very hard to moderate manners, there is no question of that, but I sometimes wonder if we haven't reached the point where it would be better to try at least. I realize that can be difficult as people often are quite passionate about their political ideals, but much of what I observe isn't people getting heated up about a pet topic, it's just people being jackasses because they CAN. They take pride in it. They rile other people up on purpose, and will often tell you they are doing so, merely so they can sit back and watch the fireworks. They act smug and superior and so damned certain they are correct about everything that it amuses them when others get angry at their derisive commentary.

You know who these people are if you've been here more than a few months. We all do. We can't name them publicly of course, and that is a good thing in the main, but we all know. You know, that guy who, if you disagree with him, asserts that the reason for you doing so is because you have "the reading comprehension of a lump of moldy cheese", or that woman who upon reading your comments tells you to "go take another bong hit and leave the discussion to the grown-ups Sweetie". There is no place on a serious discussion board for tripe like that, and on it's better days that is something that DU can at least appear to be aspiring to . The question is, do we want it to be?

169. True, but the genius of the creators of DU is evident in these features:
"Hide thread", "Ignore", and a few others.

For example, I sort by start time, thus letting flame wars sink.

I know of no other discussion board that offers these features and this is the best board, by far, IMHO.

Given the choice between trying to regulate the offensive behaviors mentioned in your reply and providing features to allow users to modify, I'll go with the latter.

122. I'm in with "Other"
Have to agree the bad manners displays are juvenile and annoying. Believe me, I am no prima donna, but I feel the swearing gets way over the top too often. Most of us communicate well enough without having to resort to "OMFG." As far as President Obama, this is a big enough forum that some of us think he's all wrong, others think he's just what we need and with all the variations in between. Sounds about right to me. This is a pretty good website after all.

125. The way some of DU reacted to the Edwards affair
That was the incident that very nearly made me swear off ever coming to DU again. It seemed like DU was buying into all the standard M$M lines about how much of a disgrace it was, etc. "I can't trust him anymore," "he misled all of us," blah blah blah, and meanwhile, cheering on Bill Clinton's speech at the DNC a couple weeks later. Sure, what he did was wrong, but the way that Edwards has been seemingly blackballed around here since then has really bothered me. I expect this kind of crap from the sheeple who think they can judge the "honesty" of a politician by their very human personal foibles, but from the advanced minds here at DU, I'd expect a little nuance on this issue, some acknowledgment of his leadership on issues that no other major Dems seem to want to touch.

In general, this kind of hypocrisy, double standards, and self-righteous holier-than-thou bullshit is a real turn-off a lot of the time. But I always come back.

134. Other...
that there are a very few people prepared to quote/accept the views of right-wing people and sites if these are negative about Bush, the war, or the Establishment. I can understand it when it's British newspapers like the Daily Hate-Mail and Torygraph, because Americans may not realize what they're like. But sadly, it was DU that introduced me to WhatReally(Never)Happened and WakeUpFromYourSlumber, not to mention a few Pat Buchanan and Ron Paul quotes on occasion.

Not common, but the question was 'what I like least here'.

145. The Obama can do no right crowds.
I mean seriously, I've been here since Summer of '04. I was too intimidated to even think of joining then, I was just massively uninformed - but I couldn't get enough of reading this place. A year later I felt confident enough to join in the conversation.

I ranted and raved and signed petitions and marched and was in a constant state of outrage and fury and fright over bush Co.

so. Now? EVEN when we win! even when we win there is STILL all the same outrage here just as there was 4 or 5 years ago. I think a lot of people here are addicted to the drama of it all - I'm not.

I am ECSTATIC! I LOVE OBAMA! BIDEN! HILLARY! and am loving what is happening in my Country and around the world BECAUSE of OBama! and this is coming from a Die Hard Hillary Supporter that wasn't even going to vote if Obama won the primary, lol.

I don't even really need D.U. anymore to be honest. I'm too happy for this place. ha! nah, really I love D.U. warts and all. I somehow made it through the primaries without being banned and am pretty proud of that as most Hillary supporter's were; I think that in itself tells you how much this place means to me.

there is no place like it anywhere else on the net. I'm just good at ignoring the parts I don't like :)

150. The cognitive dissonance it creates when new information about 9/11

That, to me, is a sign of double standards unbecoming to "progressive" DU.

In all honesty I bet this issue is one of the biggest objection many of us have to DU, but very few are willing to admit it.

Agree or disagree with 9/11, but at least let people talk intelligently about the issue in public using evidence. That never happens. It is banished to the forum where it decends into shouting matches and people who abusively say things that a good deal of the time aren't even debates, just strawman arguments.

170. Censorship? There's an entire forum dedicated to nothing but. In fact,
for that forum, they've even gone so far as to lift the DU-wide ban on speculative conspiracy theories. 9/11 is the least censored topic on DU; you simply can't post garbage conspiracy theories about anything else and expect to have them stand.
