How To Decrease Gov. Spending, Quickly
First, have the Congress Critters pay for their own insurance.

Use the internet, much like DU forums, as the main communication medium for congress. Only members of congress and their staff would be allowed to post, but all of us could read up on what they are doing and discuss on the side. That would decrease by 50% all travel expenses, mailing costs, etc.

Put GWB in prison with 6 round the clock SS guards. The savings would be enormous and his state secrets would be safe from Al Queda, who otherwise might try grabbing and torturing him.

2. Eh?
You wouldn't like to be privy to how congress goes about our business?

You think we should spend millions allowing Bush to walk around free?

Do you know how much we spend on medicine for 535 congress critters? Why should we pay their bills? Who cares if they croak, they are easily replaced.

4. so you were serious?
well okay, on your congressional health insurance proposal, we would save the government share of the their employee benefits (typically employees choose the Blue Cross Blue Shield policy).

that would save $9166 per member of the House or Senate (assuming their families are covered by the same policy). so for all of congress, this would save 4.9 million dollars.

do you consider a 4.9 million dollar spending cut significant?

3. Congressional pay/travel expenses don't account for even a tiny fraction of a percent of the budget

But I'm all for solutions that save every taxpayer a few pennies.

6. Want to really save dollars $$$. Shut down the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
Shut down 1/3 of the 800 military bases around the world.

Now we are talking serious money and real savings.
