2. 'Grip' is a somewhat archaic term for 'suitcase', or 'valise'.
When grandpa went on a trip he packed his grip.
I guess it was a grip because it had a handle and could be carried with one hand.
As opposed to a steamer trunk.

Why do we tell people to "get a grip" when they are off the rails?

3. Beautiful bag, I doubt many are made like that anymore.
As a kid, my grandfather carried something similar. I always wondered what he kept in it. Our family doctor also carried a "grip" like that. Beautiful workmanship. I haven't seen one in ages.

Even if I had a use for one, I would never be able to afford one of the quality of your pictured bag.

Yea, I need to get a grip. Good place to store by retirement funds. On second thought, Never mind, for that I now need a change purse.

5. That particular style is called a Gladstone bag.
Hinged luggage we now take for granted was first developed in the late 19th century. The Gladstone bag, as it came to be known, was a small portmanteau built over a rigid frame which could separate into two equal sections. It was made of stiff leather and often belted with lanyards. It was given its name after William E. Gladstone (1809-1898), the four-times Prime Minister of the United Kingdom who was noted for the amount of travelling he did. Although thought of as a British invention, it is actually based on earlier French models.
