Mika and Scumborough throw Gillibrand under the bus..they call Carolyn Maloney the next NY Senator
Edited on Wed Mar-18-09 01:05 PM by SuperTrouper
This morning on Morning Joe, Mika and Joe Scarborough were fawning over Rep. Carolyn Maloney's brutal attack against AIG and her call to tax their bonuses to the max! They also showed a videoclip of Long Island Rep. Carolyn McCarthy saying that AIG should be taxed 1000% on their bonuses. Both Congresswomen are on record about their Senatorial aspirations next year. Scarborough went as far as saying that Maloney is the next NY Senator and that he and Mika would campaign for her in Upstate New York, specifically Elmira to help her unseat Gillibrand. Carolyn Maloney looked happy and was coy about her Senatorial election but did not discourage Mika and Joe from jumping on her bandwagon. I think that Gillibrand must be sorry that she accepted David Paterson's (talking about a sinking candidate) offer to replace SOS Hillary Clinton as NY Senator.

5. The more liberal of which two?
Maloney is definitely more liberal compared to Carolyn McCarthy. McCarthy was an avid war supporter as late as 2006. Maloney supported the war initially, but later turned on it. Maloney has a good record on middle class issues, but she's also got some ethics issues, namely taking ten grand in contributions from sugar growers just days after voting against an end to sugar subsidies.

If you mean compared to Kirsten Gillibrand, it's a bit of a toss up, since their records are pretty similar. Gillibrand is openly for gay marriage, Maloney hasn't taken a position. Maloney's also somewhat more pro-trade and pro-immigration than Gillibrand has a record of being.

8. I would tend to say no.
As I said, they've got similar records with the exceptions of trade and immigration. (Though Gillibrand's been softening on immigration now that she no longer represents a farming-heavy district.) A lot of the flak Gillibrand has gotten is more for being from upstate, and therefore being perceived by some of the NYC centric crowd as being a yokel.

I think though that in this case Joe Scar's main thrill is just at the thought of Dems eating each other. Plus the fact that whoever the Republicans put up in the general could run against Maloney as being a "New York City liberal," whereas Gillibrand could pretty much carve her name on that seat as long as she survives the primary.

11. Always happy to. One added thing...
In the interest of context, I'll point out that both Maloney and Gillibrand have good reasons for taking those stands on those issues. Gillibrand represented a rural farming-based district where use of illegal immigrant labor can kill local economies; Maloney on the other hand represents deep in New York City, where increased trade means increased business.

7. Replace SOS Hillary Clinton as NY Senator
To complete a term, one term. She wasn't appointed to replace Sen. Clinton forever. The other Democrats have every right to run for the seat. Nobody's under the bus - they just have to run for election, including Gillibrand.

13. What does unity have to do with it?
There will be a number of primary candidates and New York Democrats will choose among them. Then New York State voters will decide who will be Senator of New York with their votes. Gillibrand wasn't appointed for more than the remainder of Clinton's last term. After that it takes an election.
