The GOP's strategy in effect.
Michelle Malkin: I hope Obama fails.

The Radical Right Republicans at CPAC

Limbaugh Takes On Gingrich: ‘We’ve Got To Stamp This Out Within This Movement’

Transparent: This is the tired old game the GOP likes to play. They did it when Bush's approval rating tanked. Bush would do a lot of stupid shit and set it up for Repubs to reject or counter him. The stakes are higher now. The GOP is in critical condition so the loonies are out in force (the only way to get attention), and at some point the so-called "moderate" Repubs will step in and pretend to be the voice of reason. They'll claim to oppose Obama and the Dems on principle while denouncing the crazies. Remember they tried this before the 2006 election too.

5. Highly predictable:
Kristol Takes On Limbaugh: We ‘Should’ Hope For Obama To ‘Succeed’

The Weekly Standard’s Bill Kristol, however, seems to disagree with this sentiment. In an interview with Fox and Friends yesterday, Kristol broke with the Limbaugh line. Discussing Obama’s recent actions to fix the economy with progressive blogger David Sirota, Kristol said that Americans “should” “hope” that Obama’s policies “succeed”:

<...>

Is Kristol, one of the most influential conservative pundits, going toe-to-toe with Rush Limbaugh, also one of the most influential conservative pundits? Thus far, those who dared to challenge the mighty Limbaugh have quickly kneeled before him (see e.g., Michael Steele, Rep. Phil Gingrey, and Gov. Mark Sanford).
