Read the NY Post's lame, offensive attempt at an apology

Wednesday's Page Six cartoon - caricaturing Monday's police shooting of a chimpanzee in Connecticut - has created considerable controversy.

It shows two police officers standing over the chimp's body: "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill," one officer says.

It was meant to mock an ineptly written federal stimulus bill.

Period.

But it has been taken as something else - as a depiction of President Obama, as a thinly veiled expression of racism.

This most certainly was not its intent; to those who were offended by the image, we apologize.

However, there are some in the media and in public life who have had differences with The Post in the past - and they see the incident as an opportunity for payback.

To them, no apology is due.

Sometimes a cartoon is just a cartoon - even as the opportunists seek to make it something else.

2. They could have ended this thing with a sincere apology
but since they seem determined to dig themselves in deeper I say let them do it.

12. NY Post was trying to give the paper away yesterday
As I was walking out of a Broadway local stop on the UWS yesterday, someone was giving the Post away for free. There weren't many takers. I'll keep my eyes open and see whether they continue trying to give the paper away.
I haven't checked the circulation but even before this incident, I hardly ever saw anyone reading the Post on the subway. I see the Times, Daily News, and El Diario much more frequently than the Post.

16. At least in NY there is some competition
for newspapers. It's not like they are the only game in town. They deserve a boycott. A long one.

9. An apology dripping with insincerity.
We have an innocent cartoon misconstrued as racist and humorless grudge-holders who are piling on as payback. Who's the victim here?

My previous contempt for the Post was clearly insufficient. Credit where credit is due- they have reached a new low.

10. Are there anymore feet for the repukes to shoot?
You see a large amount of people outraged at something, and then do the complete opposite to quell those angers.

Sounds like the typical republikkkan M.O. to me.

These clowns have no future.

13. Their hateful vitriol is losing its luster. But, they try to be mean.
Meant to mock an ineptly written federal stimulus bill by mocking the writer as a rabidly angry dark looking monkey.

Period, un-unh.

Then, no apology is due, not just to opportunists who disagree with them, rather, no apology is due to anyone who ever disagreed with them in the past.

Finally, those who saw it as that subtle style of racism that pin-head brained racists find so delightfully intelligent of themselves, well, they weren't offended, so no need for an apology for them in giving them the sickening delight of thinking they once again outsmarted those liberal elites by putting such tripe under their radar, only to have them, once again, not to realize that it's just too far beneath people with brains to say, yeah dufusses, we got it, we feel sorry for you, we don't know a cure for people who actually like sick feelings.

Period indeed.

14. "we're victims of attack by people who fabricate claims of racism out of nothing"
my short version of what they're saying.

no remorse whatsoever, they're admitting they can't see the racism in it even after it's been pointed out to them.

to the extent they're sorry, they're only sorry that other people chose to get offended. they do not acknowledge that they gave them any provokation.

"We're sorry you crybabies were offended."
