1. There're perfectly legitimate reasons why the guy's a bigot.
This isn't one of them.

4. Sorry, accuracy was not the cartoonists intent.
I think that photo was used as a justification/cover for the sign.

5. How is this tragic incident fodder for a comic?
I don't get it. A chimp was murdered, and a kind woman seriously injured, and some fuckwad equated this with President Obama's stimulus. Dear mother of god, how soulless do you have to be to even make a connection, and further, peddle this shit?

6. I wasn't commenting on that, just pointing out that it's clear the guy saw this photo...
And that's why he put the Beware of Dog sign in it. Because that was the actual scene.

8. I guess the question still remains. Why is he using this event in the 1st place?
There is no relation between this and the stimulus package in any way, shape or manner. The fact that he would use this tragic event in his cartoon makes the idea that he used it to score racist points against Obama more plausible. Because he really had to st-t-t-r-r-r-e-t-t-t-t-t-c-c-ch to put these 2 things together.

So the question becomes, what in the heck was his motive?

12. I can't speak for the guy to be honest... there are three possible explanations....
Edited on Wed Feb-18-09 10:10 PM by RollWithIt
#1: He's a racist.

#2: He didn't think of the racist connotation between a chimp and Obama.

#3: He's not a racist but he chose to use the imagery like the New Yorker cartoonist did. Pushing the envelope I guess.

To be honest, when I first saw it I just thought it was a dumb cartoon. I didn't connect Obama to the dead chimp. It never even crossed my mind until I saw the huge uproar over it. I'd like to see this guy interviewed.

14. Yes, I'd like to see that interview too.
To be honest, when I 1st saw it I just thought is was grotesque. The violence hit me hard and I was just sad and thinking "what is wrong with this guy?" But you are correct. Dumb cartoon did go through my mind as well.

Unfortunately, I didn't see it until I had already heard about an hour of talk radio on it so I was expecting to see the chimp as Obama. But I was surprised to be just overwhelmed by the violence.

Whether or not it was intended that way, having grown up around many racists I would expect them to interpret it as chimp = Obama. Seeing some of this guy's other work, I would expect he knows his audience well enough that he expected them to take it that way as well. I think it's one of those "inside" jokes where he knows the people who are his fans will take it one way while he can explain it away as something else to those who don't appreciate racist humor.

17. Sorry, I don't have any links. I have seen some other threads...
here on this topic that have included some of this cartoonist's other works. If you look back through some of them there are some examples. I'll get back to you here if I can figure out the links to them.

7. Amen. This alone shows the caliber of this cartoonist.
Using this very tragic event to make a point in some political joke keeps me from giving this guy any benefit of the doubt.

9. It is intentionally violent as well as racist.
The fact that the picture was there does not debunk the cartoon. Only the one point about the beware of dog thing. I give them that. But it still doesn't mean the cartoon is not racist.

18. and the woman that owned the chimp, whether right or wrong, is suffering too.
I cannot believe that NY Post actually took something so horrific, and used it for a cartoon.

11. How can someone be "more racist"?
Arguing over the intent of the Beware of Dog sign in the cartoon is idiotic. The cartoon is racist, violent and altogether outrageous; the sign doesn't make it more so.

13. Is the RW toonist capable of putting multiple meanings in his work?
I think so. He is hiding behind actual events to push his slime through to the masses.
