"They Call Meee Mr. Tibbs!"
"Virgil, Virgil, what the hell kind of name is that for a boy?"

In a nutshell, if you've ever seen the movie, "In the Heat of the Night" then you know exactly what's going on right now with Obama, the republicans and the media.

I can't help but chuckle to myself as I remember the great smackdown in that movie as well.

I'm just waiting patiently, savoring the anticipation of a good comeuppance. You know, the way comeuppances ought to be done. Dignified and poetic. LOL

I thought the title was a playing off of The Lion King where pumba says "They call meee Mr. Pig! But I guess not even Disney is original anymore.

5. By all means rent the video. It
is a movie I have watched at least 7 times. My favorite part is when Sidney Poiter slaps a cotton-picking white racist upside the head.

3. Well, I remember that line....
...Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger face off and Poitier just delivers that line with a level of righteousness that shook the rafters.

7. They didn't cave. They got what they wanted. LOL
They threw a lot of stuff in because they knew the republicans would cut it out. And now that they are on record cutting out funds for education, etc., he's going to blast them with it. He wanted 780b to begin with, and it looks like that's what he's getting.

So where did he cave in to the republicans?

21. The House Dems did not cave. Clyburn and others were very critical
of the Senaet. And Nancy is a force to be reckoned with. She ain't gonna fold her cards for Susy Collins.

9. LOL You said it. They're in a bad position though.
Did you see the look on McCain's face today? Looked like a man who knows they have been outmaneuvered and he hates it. Who the hell want to be in the position of being against bailing out the common man. Because after all, this is what it is on the bottom line.

Obama's got 'em between a rock and a hard place and they are engaged in some kind of test of wills. LOL McCain tried that in the campaign and got shattered. (Mr. I'm going to cancel the debate) Ha ha.

12. LOL
 Aw, whoo, thanks for that. You can't see it in this version, but my favorite moment was always the look on the butler's face the moment that he slaps him. That seems to be cut out of this one, but still, the scenes of the butler at the end are pretty good too.

17. Great movie! But I don't think there's a "call me Mr. President" thing goin' on...well,
almost. Maybe with a few people.

Mainly, I think the Repubs are goin' after him 'cause he's "inexperienced," they think, and naive. They think.

They'll larn different!

18. Did you see the movie? That's what they did in the movie
too. The analogy is perfect, all the way down to the stupid southern sheriff. If you can't see that they're engaged in a test of wills, then I don''t know what to tell you. The pukes are testing him and so is the media. Smackdown is on the way.

19. Yes, they're testing him. But not because of his race. That's my pt.
That's how I see it, anyway.

Of course, people can always see racism if they want it to be there.

This is the way it has been since I decided to support Obama in January 2008. People talking about his race constantly, how he couldn't win a state, then how whites wouldn't give him the nomination, then how whites wouldn't let him win the Presidency. And through it all, I just didn't see that happening. Those weren't the facts. It was so obvious. But of course, if a person WANTS to see race as a factor, there's no convincing them otherwise.

So I say, even now, that no...the Repubs aren't testing him because he's Af. American. They're testing him because he's relatively inexperienced, and because he's "nice," and because he's naive (they think) in thinking he'll change Washington, and because he's a Democrat (who are not known for having balls of steel). But not because he's half black.

The test? They'd be doing the same, even if he weren't half black.

Edited on Sat Feb-07-09 08:18 PM by Solomon
in America are the only non-racist people in the world. Nothing's ever about race. That's over and done with. Obama proved that, didn't he. Blah de blah blah blah.

You're the one focusing on race. The movie is about misplaced disrespect. Never miss an opportunity to dispell the idea that racism exists do you. Even when it's not appropriate to the situation. The issue is disrespect.

24. I'm not speaking about emotional blah blah icky poo stuff. I'm talking facts.
There are absolutely no facts whatsoever to indicate that anyone is going after Obama because of his race. Zippo. Nada. Not one thing.

Of course, you can always avoid the facts and just believe in the racism elf, if you want. Personal beliefs are a choice and are based on faith, not fact. Some people are just more comfortable if there is a mysterious elf out there to blame for things not working out.

I love that part too! Poiter talks about that clip in his book and how uncomfortable that was for him to do. He's awesome and I love him in "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner," also~!

23. They should have called him LIEUTENANT Tibbs.
He was, after all, a lieutenant detective, as the movie said. Give the guy the respect of the rank he deserves. "Mister" either made him a plain civilian, or if he was in the military, the executive officer right under a ship's captain.

By the way, how many have seen the parody trailer done by the filmmaker Damon Packard, "They Call Me Mister Pookie!"
