Paul Krugman: "It's time for Obama to go on the offensive"
New York Times
Op-Ed Columnist
On the Edge
By PAUL KRUGMAN
February 5, 2009

A not-so-funny thing happened on the way to economic recovery. Over the last two weeks, what should have been a deadly serious debate about how to save an economy in desperate straits turned, instead, into hackneyed political theater, with Republicans spouting all the old clichés about wasteful government spending and the wonders of tax cuts.

It’s as if the dismal economic failure of the last eight years never happened — yet Democrats have, incredibly, been on the defensive. Even if a major stimulus bill does pass the Senate, there’s a real risk that important parts of the original plan, especially aid to state and local governments, will have been emasculated.

Would the Obama economic plan, if enacted, ensure that America won’t have its own lost decade? Not necessarily: a number of economists, myself included, think the plan falls short and should be substantially bigger. But the Obama plan would certainly improve our odds. And that’s why the efforts of Republicans to make the plan smaller and less effective — to turn it into little more than another round of Bush-style tax cuts — are so destructive.

So what should Mr. Obama do? Count me among those who think that the president made a big mistake in his initial approach, that his attempts to transcend partisanship ended up empowering politicians who take their marching orders from Rush Limbaugh. What matters now, however, is what he does next.

It’s time for Mr. Obama to go on the offensive. Above all, he must not shy away from pointing out that those who stand in the way of his plan, in the name of a discredited economic philosophy, are putting the nation’s future at risk. The American economy is on the edge of catastrophe, and much of the Republican Party is trying to push it over that edge.

Please read the entire article at:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/06/opinion/06krugman.html?_r=2

It's starting to look like President Obama is getting the message on the futility of "bi-partisan" collaboration with the Republican party and finally has begun going on the offensive. This is not time to let up! They want to destroy the Obama administration and they want to destroy it soon!

Obama has started to act like the leader of the Democratic Party and the nation with his recent comments regarding the economic recovery package. That's good. And it's time to step it up and not agree to the devastating cuts proposed by some conservative Democrats and their Republican friends in the Senate. The "bi-partisan" proposal to cut vital program while spending billions more for the Pentagon should be rejected by the Senate.

And once again, let's reject the political nonsense that claims 60 votes are needed in the Senate to pass legislation. That wasn't true under George W. Bush and it isn't true under President Obama.

60 votes are needed to break a real Republican filibuster (let them hang themselves) and 51 votes are needed to pass legislation.

9. In what possible way am I projecting?
I have no vendetta against Obama. Krugman supports Obama's plan. I support Obama's plan. I want him to fight for it, like Krugman does. I don't want him to roll over for tax cuts and defense spending. There's nothing wrong with that.

19. It's not projecting.
It's noticing the pom pom brigade who denounce any criticism - even when they eventually are forced to admit that the criticism is productive and justified. Any post that suggests that Obama might need to do something different will have at least two or three of the same knee-jerk snarkies posting away. Never any discussion of the OP. Just a cry to leave Barack alone. Waaaaaa!

President Obama is not so fragile that he needs your fervent, but pointless, defense.

"Why hasn't President Obama sent everyone who criticizes him (except Republicans) to GITMO!?! Where's my fucking pony??!? WAAAAAAAAH!!!"

17. Psst! Just cause Obama is better than Bush doesn't mean he's automatically awesome
In fact, with all the Clinton-era appointments and his totally ignoring the true progressives and liberals while licking Republican buttholes, I'd say he's a big DLC corporate disappointment, but that's just me. Darn me and my reality based observations. :eyes:

3. Do you ever tire of posting nothing but articles questioning Obama?
You must really live a depressing life to not find any hope or optimism in anything dealing with Obama.

I normally don't pity people, because God knows with how f'd up my life can be, they don't need it, but I actually do pity you. You seem very bitter and angry about something. It's sad and not a way I think anyone could enjoy living their life.

But oh well.

Whatever makes you go, right?

8. Krugman supports Obama's plan.
He's telling him not to back down from it. How is that not supportive?

10. That's fine, but every article from this poster has a negative tone.
Even this article questions whether Obama is fighting enough.

I get Krugman and what he wants, but I tire of seeing nothing but articles from this poster questioning Obama in some way.

Sure, there are valid criticisms, but it seems this poster is only intent on posting negative articles.

It gets old.

12. I guess I just try not to read people's motivations.
Instead, I find it more useful to focus on the actual material presented.

It avoids "poisoning the well."

13. Do you ever read a post before commenting on it?

Well, that sure was negative! Do you even know the meaning of words such as negative or optimism?

I think you need to sober up. In case you didn't notice, the country appears to be sliding into a severe economic depression.
I guess we should follow your example and not be upset or angry with that. OK! I'm just bubbling all over with optimism after reading your post.

Are you enjoying the good life unaffected by this economic crisis?

And don't bring your God into this even if you think he talks to you. And put your pity where the sun don't shine.

7. People underestimate the power of Conventional Wisdom
Reality being the opposite of CW is not enough to convince people that the CW is wrong. It takes a lot more than that. The CW machine has psychology, logistical sleight of hand, and tricky semantics on its side. It has teamwork and coordination.

11. He's going to be pushing really hard next week. According to the briefing today
Gibbs said he would be making a major speech on Monday(?) - sometime this week on the major networks I believe. He also said he'd be holding Townhall meetings in Indiana(?) and Florida.

Real TH meetings where the audience is live and not subject to handpicking.

?'s because Gibbs said more details would be going out to the press in the next few days.

16. Good. That plays to Obama's strengths.
BUT, I hope he pulls out this "compromise" language then if he's going to take them on. Just go for the original package and fuck the Republicans.

18. Yep. It's time for him to stop
trying to make the republicans like him. He should just go on television and tell the Democrats in Congress to vote for the bill, that they tried to get the republicans on board, but they wanted politics instead. So now the Democrats are going to have to do it alone.

Yes I know. That would get another shoulder to shoulder republican vote. They would all link arms as the nation sank into the sea. But kowtowing to their shit while they call Obama names is not getting us anywhere. Obama convince the nation to vote for him. He needs to convince them to get their republicans to straighten up. Playing nice is not working.
