Steele to Obama: "How do you like me now."
This attitude will the reason he will fail. Howard Dean wasn't out pumping himself up, he was out working and organizing on the behalf of the party, not on the behalf of himself.

I have followed Steele's career for awhile. He is a talker, not a doer. He is great on TV, but not great on the ground.

Yes, I see this ending well for us.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0109/18233.html

He vowed to dispel public perceptions that the GOP is “a party unconcerned about minorities, a party that’s unconcerned about the lives and dreams of average Americans.”

“For so long we’ve allowed the Democrats to define us. We’ve allowed the media to define us,” he said. “And so it’s important for us to be able to establish with clarity what we believe.”

Steele also had a message for President Barack Obama, who stumped for his opponent during his unsuccessful 2006 Senate campaign.

“I would say to the new president, congratulations. It is going to be an honor to spar with him,” Steele said. “And I would follow that up with: How do you like me now?”

73. There were some great comments on the NYT yesterday about the Steele pick
http://blow.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/01/31/whither-the-republicans/

One of Steele's comments when he accepted the position was "to those who are obstructionists, be prepared to be knocked over".....Are you fucking kidding me?....What a bunch of juvenile, macho BS....

Imagine of Obama during the campaign would have said (let's say he's in Philadelphia): "If you stand with me, knock on doors for me, make some calls for me, I promise you, we won't just win PA., we will win this general election & and BTW Republicans, be preapared to be knocked over"...I don't think it would have gone over to well...LOL

The Republicans are a regional (southern) party catering to the Archie Bunkers' of this world.....

Michael Steele won't help them in any northeastern state, the west, etc...

I'm guessing if Steele were given the option of being Senator Steele from the Great State of Maryland or head of his party, he'd take senator ten times out of ten.

Pfft, if anything, Obama should be saying that to this idiot.

48. The irony in that, of course, is that Steele- a perpetual loser and failure--
was tapped by the GOP solely for the color of his skin. As for the "content of his character"-- well, let's just say I'm anticipating a rather embarrassing, if not downright illegal, RNC scandal before the end of the month. He's certainly off to a good start with this laughable gaffe!

83. No, the press did.....
.... if you hear the original clip, he said "how you like me now?" Which is actually worse IMO.

Barack Obama is the coolest man on the planet yet is fully capable of communicating with people without sounding, as we've already noticed, like a 80s hip hop star.

I think Seth Myers said it best on SNL "The Republicans dont seem to understand that not just ANY black guy will do."

(And lest anyone think I'm an anti-rap snob, you should know know that Slim Thug's "The Boss" was on my Obama ipod playlist for the entire duration of 2008. ;) There's a time and a place for everything. )

They are weaklings, spoiled by their long-running majorities and their essential cowardice.

15. Yeah, I'm sure Obama is real scared of this clown.
Let's do a little comparison here. Obama just became the first black president in a landslide election, and won huge House and Senate majorities with it.

Steele is the the first black chairman of a party which just got their fat asses kicked all over the place in elections, and are scratching and clawing to stay relevant. And if we get another Democratic senator from New Hampshire, they will only be as relevant as Obama feels they need to be.

25. Steele is either purposely lying, or delusional about the democrats/media defining the GOP
That line surprised me the most that he's said recently.

I mean really, when's the last time you've seen a democrat running for office attack their opponent for ignoring minorities? It's all in the GOP's actions that have caused people to say it's a white's only party where minorities aren't welcome. The GOP did that to themselves by refusing to stick their necks out for those minority groups when they needed it most. I mean look at what happened to the GOPers in congress who used to support immigration reform, they folded under pressure from the base and abandoned their previous positions for fear of getting primaried out, they folded even though they knew the future of their party depended on capturing the Hispanic vote.

If the GOP keeps on using hated/persecuted minority groups for scare tactics/rallying the base, like Hispanics, Muslims, gays, etc, they're going to burn a large part of the electorate that may have supported them otherwise. Worse yet, whenever they bash groups like Gays and talks about the 'horrors' of gay marriage they burn support from more then just gays, they burn it from young people to, that overwhelmingly support gay rights/marriage. Obviously a political party can't keep on losing the young vote by a 2 to 1 margin like the GOP did this year, and expect to still be a major force in politics in another decade or two (assuming of course that future young people continue to support democrats over republicans), how someone votes the first few times they do is often how they vote for the rest of their life.

And that is not going to change with Michael Steele because they are going to grow weary of feeling like they need to cater to minorities for any reason. Democratic policies favor minorities. Republican policies don't. You can put lipstick on a pig and its still a pig! LOL!!!

It proves that the Repugs just don't get it -- and that means they will be further marginalized in 2010.

The Repugs have 19 seats up for election, Dems 17. I hope Steele and the GOP all the way down continue their attacks. 'Cause we could well be looking at 67-seat Supermajority status in 2010.

Think it can't happen? We'd only need to pick up 8 seats out of 19 possible to get 67. We got 8 this last election, and I think it is certainly doable, especially after 2 years of progress under Obama.

They thought since Sarah and Hillary shared a gender, that people wouldn't notice that Sarah is definitely no Hillary. And I don't think it will take America long to realize that Michael Steele is most assuredly no Barack Obama.

Steele is hoping that by going after a high profile figure like Obama that his will increase his own stature. He is an opportunist of the worst sort.

This tool is just the latest of stunts from the GOP that ends up backfiring. They pick Palin to get the women vote only to see that america wasn't stupid enough to vote for her just because of her anatomy. And now they push an African American to head up their party with the hopes of proving 1) they understand minorities and 2) that they care about americans and making this country work. Yet they new "token" err, i mean choice has come out to debunk the changes the GOP was hoping Americans might see in them.

GOP embracing minorities - No Steel is just another "we think you're stupid enough to fall for this token" figurehead. He doesn't represent the majority of African Americans, or most minorities in general.

GOP Wants us to think they care about americans and working with the Dems to make this country work. - Steel comes out and said screw bi-partisanship oh and "I'm in the business of winning elections!"

AKA - I'm in this for myself, which means i'm an excellent representative for my party.

When will the GOP give up on these lame hat tricks?

"We’ve allowed the media to define us"

:banghead:

Ah, the good ole reliable canard about the so-called "liberal media". To quote, Eric Alterman, WHAT liberal media, Mr. Steele? The one that your cronies and party have living up your butts 24-7-365? Where's that damned Bill Kristol quote about the so-called "liberal media?" Geez!!! Do they even watch the same news where you can't turn the dial (except for two hours on MSNBC every night) without seeing a Repuke on it spewing their talking points and spin, only being asked "softball" questions, and, most importantly, never having any so-called "investigative reporters" challenging them on ANY of their BS? Is it THAT media that you're talking about when you say that you've allowed the media to define you and your party?

Mr. Steele: The truth is, of course, if your party is full of racists, homophobes, and other assorted bigots whom spend most of their time tearing people down and obstructing/reversing progress, then that IS what will come to define you and no amount of "spin" will be able to overcome that. Most people apparently see the Repulican Party for what it truly is and, if the last two elections are any indicator, they.don't.like.it.

He better go talk to rush and see what it is that he's supposed to be doing. That's where the marching orders are going to come from. Dumb fucker.

49. If he ever said that to either Obama, I'm sure that they would laugh in his mustachioed face.
I mean open-mouthed, tear streaming, rib-cracking laughs. Right in his face.

Does this fool even for a second think that being the Conveniently Black chairman of the RNC even comes CLOSE to what Obama has done?? An honor to "spar with him"?? With OBAMA?? Obama probably won't give this clown the time of the damn day. And he'd be right to do so.

I can't believe that jackass. "How do you like me now?" God, could he be any more lame and/or clueless??

He should be kissing Obama's feet as he would never even have been considered seriously to head the RNC if Obama hadn't won the election. Obama is the only reason he is the head of the RNC.The repugs think they have pulled off something special with picking Steele but they will not expand their base with minorites with this pick. Putting a minority face on the same bankrupt repug policies that have ruined our econmy isn't fooling anyone. What a joke the GOP is.

80. I disagree. Republicans are discouraged. False bravado works them up into
a tizzy.

They were thinking damn the DEMS picked a black man when we already have a bad reputation with people as it relates to any kind of numerical minority. Steele comes out swinging his Johnson all over the place telling them how minorities need to feel.

How many AAs interviewed during the election season talked about how important it is for us to feel included? The 10% of AAs who vote Republican can't convince the rest of us Republicans mean us well because they have not demonstrated any good outward steps in that direction. Republicans who say most AAs share many conservative beliefs are correct. W.'s line about the soft bigotry of low expectations rung true for some AAs too. If Steele comes up with some honest policies and changes which embrace AAs, Republicans might be able to peel off about 10% more than George W. Bush had.

That would be devastating for Democrats. The fact that 85% or more of voting AAs choose Democrats in most elections since Civil Rights is problematic for Republicans. That 10% in Ohio helped Bush in 2004.

GOP Dirty Tricks

Slate.com by Bonnie Goldstein, Thursday, Nov. 9, 2006, at 6:41 PM ET

Among the victims of the Democratic sweep on Election Day were Maryland Republican Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr., who was running for reelection, and Maryland Republican Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele, who was running for U.S. Senate. Both lost. But before you shed too many tears for them, check out this dirty trick that their campaigns have admitted to.

The goal was to capture African-American voters. This is not an easy thing for a Republican to accomplish in Maryland, even if, like Steele, you happen to be African-American yourself. But the black vote was deemed crucial, and postelection analysis suggests this proved true. So the Ehrlich and Steele campaigns sent out to heavily Democratic black neighborhoods in Prince George's County flyers that were designed to deceive black voters into thinking the candidates had been endorsed by three popular Maryland African-American politicians: Prince George's County Executive Jack B. Johnson, former P.G. County Executive Wayne K. Curry, and former Rep. Kweisi Mfume, who more recently served as president of the NAACP. (In fact, two of these three men had endorsed Ehrlich and Steele's Democratic opponents, Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley and Democratic Rep. Ben Cardin. The third, Curry, endorsed Steele but not Ehrlich.)

To give the documents credibility, the campaigns needed to find African-American campaign workers to distribute them. So, they bused in homeless blacks from Pennsylvania and Delaware, paying them $100 and feeding them two meals. When asked by reporters about the flyer, Ehrlich pointed out that it is legal for workers from out of state to participate in local get-out-the-vote activities: "If folks are here from out of town that's fine with me. That's what the Democrats have always done. It's legal." To read the flyer, scroll down and then proceed to the following three pages.

This is one of many of his electioneering flyers that confuses his party affiliation with the Democratic party

On the next page of the "sample ballot" flyer is a checkbox by Steele's name for Senator

and the last page is the helpful advice "It is OK to vote for a Republican in the general election without changing your party registration"

(clip...)

The GOP knows that Steele will be a reliable vote stealer, down with any and all dirty tricks they use to win elections, and without which thier party is lost. It's Steele and Ken Blackwell from Ohio stealing votes from Kerry in 2004 all the way.

Thom Hartmann is talking about all the other times Steele pulled the same "sample ballot" gimmick today (Monday) in the first hour on his radio show. You can get the podcast or MP3 of the show here this afternoon for free - http://www.ktlk.com/cc-common/podcast.html">KTLK archives

88. FReepers have already turned on Steele
Michael Steele, the new chairman of the Republican National Committee wants the GOP to reach out to candidates who support gay marriage and are pro-choice. Steele told Fox's Chris Wallace that it was "important" to reach out to those voters.

WALLACE: You are one of the co-founders of something called the Republican Leadership Council which supports candidates who favor abortion and gay rights.

STEELE: Yes.

(watch video)

WALLACE: Does the GOP needs to do a better job of reaching out to people who hold those views?

STEELE: I think -- I think that's an important opportunity for us, absolutely. Within our party we do have those who have that view as well as outside and my partnership with Christy Todd Whittman was an effort to build a bridge between moderates and conservatives.

I actually supported him for RNC Chair. Warning flags came up when he didn’t offer a staunch defense of Rush Limbaugh. Now this. Crapola.
