Military to Pledge Oath To Obama, Not Constitution

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates is extremely frustrated with orders that the White House is contemplating. According to sources at the Pentagon, including all branches of the armed forces, the Obama Administration may break with a centuries-old tradition.


A spokesman for General James Cartwright, the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, states that the Obama Administration wants to have soldiers and officers pledge a loyalty oath directly to the office of the President, and no longer to the Constitution.


"The oath to the Constitution is as old as the document itself." the spokesman said, "At no time in American history, not even in the Civil War, did the oath change or the subject of the oath differ. It has always been to the Constitution."


The back-and-forth between the White House and the Defense Department was expected as President George W. Bush left office. President Obama has already signed orders to close Guantanamo and to pull combat troops from Iraq. But, this, say many at the Defense Department, goes to far.<snip>

I hate to tell those stupid fucking dipshits this, but ENLISTED people have ALWAYS sworn an oath to the Constitution AND their commanders-in-chief. There is a line in their oath that says they will obey the orders of the President of the United States, and the orders of the officers appointed over them.

Officers swear an oath to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution, very similar to the oath that Justice Roberts botched. If the Commander-in-chief goes wonky and issues an unconstitutional order, officers aren't obligated to obey it. They need to be sure they're right, though!

I've administered both oaths often enough, I know them (unlike Justice Roberts) by heart.

Being 23 years in the Navy I have said many times that I would....

I believe that is a loyalty Oath to the office of the President right there...Whats so new about this?

Now to the broader point about fighting in this unwinnable war against a tactic called terrror. The issue is that many of our soldiers are so traumatized that they do get "it" (the intentions of the chain of command) wrong alot. Rep Jack Murtha brought this issue out many times as did John Kerry. Abut Gharib, Gitmos, Haditha etc are examples of our guys getting it wrong.

Many of the junior enlisteds feel trapped between knowing what is the right thing to do and what they are being told to do, this issue does need serious debate and discussion and if we need to change pledges, oaths, statements whatever to get it right then we need to do it.
